She Won't Stay out of the Trash!

We have tried everything to keep Katie from getting in the trash can and nothing has worked. We have very limited storage space in our house so putting a trash can under the sink won't work because all of our cleaning supplies have to go there. Just yesterday I tried the Bitter Apple Spray. I sprayed it all around the lid of the can and she left it alone for a while but went right back to it. So then I sprayed the lid and then the bag and the trash that was in it. I would have just taken it out but I was in the middle of baking and had some stuff to put in it. Normally I would distract her with her rope toy but I shouldn't have to keep getting on to her...I know she knows better because as soon as someone says Katie she runs and tries to act innocent. Is anyone else having a problem like this? Help!

What about getting one of those motion detector/spray things. Ive seen them online, but can't remember where. It senses the dog when it is within range and then sprays citronella, or air, or water, and some just make a horrible screaching sound. That might work.

Thanks!

I will check that out. That is a great idea! She doesn't like loud sounds so a sound one would probably work!

Is there anything you can set it on top of? We keep our trash can on top of one of the dog crates so they can't reach it (also very limited space under the sink). Also, does the trash can have a lid? If there's no lid, it's going to be much more tempting to her. Either get one with a lid (if you don't already) or if you want to get really fancy, you can get the ones with a motion sensor that open/close when it senses your hand near it so the top won't accidently fall off.

Just a couple of thoughts.... We use a sealable lid garbage can.... it takes an extra second to open it up... but it sure beats watching over your shoulder and cleaning trash off the floor. Another option, My MIL keeps her garbage can under the sink in the cabinet to avoid her fur-boy from rummaging! Just a thought. It's easier sometimes to be proactive... sounds like it's an attention seeking mechanism if it's while you're baking or doing something else! ;) Sounds all too farmiliar. Good Luck! :)

I'm not promoting putting fear into a dog, but it just happenend, and by accident it worked. The lil pup was watching patiently while I took the trash out of the can and take out a new bag. Since the bag comes from a roll inside of a box, it's folded and you kinda have to grab the opening and snap it open in the air. It makes that loud pop and it instantly gets bigger. Well the pup took off and is afraid of trash bags and won't go near them. She will sniff the lid, but will back away when you open it, like as if that bag is going to jump out and get her.

So much great advice!

Our trash can has a lid but I will have to check into the the sealable kind. I have never heard of those. Thanks for all of the suggestions!

uggh!

Chief has recently become really bad about this. He usually won't do it when we are home, but when we are at work he will get everything out of that trash...and literally spread it throughout the entire house. Last night while we were sleeping, he got into the bathroom trash can and tore a dirty baby diaper. Yeah...i had poo everywhere on the carpet in the living room.

I was hoping to hear ideas on how to train them not to do this. But I guess I will have to do better about shutting doors and locking up my trash cans! I usually lock up my kitchen trash in the utility room when we leave for the day.

What is it about nasty trash that gets them going!! haha
