Took the new dog for her shots on Thursday. Nala was due for hers at the end of December so I went ahead and took her to get her shots too. On Saturday Nala started coughing. Just a few coughs every few hours. Continued on Sunday. Being the paranoid mommy that I am, I called the emergency vet clinic. They said it sounded like kennel cough and to take her to my regular vet asap. So this morning I took her to the vet. She has lost a pound since Thursday and had a slight fever. Poor thing has kennel cough. Vet said the new pup will probably develop a cough too. Vet said I caught it very early (paranoia pays off!) and antibiotics should have her feeling all better in a few days. And I tell ya, she did not at all appreciate the 10ml of cough syrup that I gave her. Wait until she figures out that she has to get it 3 times a day!

I had been talking about the new dog in the Chit Chat section so I guess I need to catch ya'll up since my post got moved... :)

I took in a stray dog 2 weeks ago (there are a couple pics of her in my gallery). She was wandering around the parking lot of an auto repair shop right on the corner of a busy 4 lane road. She's a "good old-fashioned terrier mix" as my vet put it. She and Nala get along fantastically. They play and play. Nala plays pretty rough and not only can this little 15 lb girl take it, she enjoys it! They race around the house and the backyard. And she is just such a sweetheart. I took her to the vet the day after I found her to have her scanned for a micro-chip but she didn't have one. I held off on shots and stuff because I wanted to see if anyone would claim her. But it doesn't appear that anyone is missing her so I guess I've adopted a new dog! She got a clean bill of health but the vet said that all dogs carry kennel cough, it's just whether their immune systems are weak enough to allow them to get it. He said that Nala didn't have a weak immune system but since she hadn't been around kennel cough, as soon as she was exposed to it she got it. It had been almost a year since she was vaccinated for it. So, antibiotics and cough syrup. And no rough housing for 5 whole days! She's going to go nuts! But as long as she's healthy for Christmas - she's already got tons of toys under the tree!
