She became a guard dog

Last night my girlfriend and I were sat on the sofa watching tv and Shankley my 6 1/2 month old boxer bitch was fast asleep on her bean bag. Suddenly she jumps up wide awake runs towards the back door and starts growling in a really low deep growl. She then ran back in the lounge and looked at us as if to say "don't worry I've got this one covered" she went back to the back door and carried on growling for a good few minutes. I decided to go and check it out, when I went outside my next door neighbour was taking his bins out. It took quite a while for Shankley to settle back down she really was mad about something. Joanne and myself were both really shocked at her actions because up until then she have never done anything like this. We are both really pleased however that Shankley wanted to protect us you could tell that she was making sure that we were both ok before she went back to sleep. It just goes to show that Boxers are really protective of their family when they feel something is not right.

What do you guys think have you had similar experiences.

It seems Shankley is becoming protective of the place she lives at. My Tina also growls when someone is doing something or making noises outside our front door, although she comletely loves it when people come inside to the house. Perhaps, because she cannot see them, she does not feel secure and gets suspicious :D

My husband went out the other night-and me and Jazmine stayed home and played. We were playing with her ball for about 20 min, when all the sudden she ran to the back door-to check it out then to the front door-just starring at it. Then she stood on top of me and just starred at the front door. She was trying to protect me from whatever she heard outside. It was so sweet. I love her so much. BOXERS ARE THE BEST!

My 6mo old Maggie did this the other night. My neighbor downstairs had a 6:00am flight out of the City and was up at about 4:30 to get ready and head to the airport. I knew he was leaving that early as he'd told me the day before, but I didn't tell Maggie.

At 4:30, she jumped up in bed, let out that low growl and a couple of soft "woofs" and more growling. She didn't stop until my neighbor left the building! I kept telling her it was "ok" since I knew it was my neighbor, but she was determined to let me know something was out of order and she was going to make sure I was safe in bed!

I was so proud of her.

My China has done this also, but she could see out the window what was going on. A van pulled in front of my house but no one got out. she growled for 30 min till the van finally left. It scared me to have an unknown van pull up like that and I'm glad I had china to protect.
She has also growled at the kids down the street and I could never figure out why. Then I watch them playing one day and the bigger kid was picking on the little ones. I think she could see this and didn't approve at all.
I'm very proud of her.

I remember the first time Sheeba did this. My husband works nights and the kids were in bed. I was laying on the couch watching TV (as usual) and Sheeba was asleep on her pillow. She all of a sudden jumped up and started growling at the front door, then would run to the kitchen and growl at the windows. She went back and forth a few times and needless to say I was scared s#%tless. I finally got up and opened the front door just enough to see out. There was nothing there. I closed the door and locked it and she laid back down but wouldn't sleep. Ever since then she growls and barks at every little noise she hears.

The other night all 3 dogs were going crazy, growling, and barking at the front door. I told my husband to check out side. Come to find out his sister had just left and the screen door didn't latch and the wind kept slightly blowing it opened.

My dogs love for people to come over and once they are inside the dogs are big babies. But before they actually see them they make a huge fuss about it. It's enough to scare off anyone that doesn't know them.

Zoe does this, too. During our drive home for Thanksgiving, we always stay over a night somewhere in Kentucky. Well, Zoe was sound asleep on the bed next to ours one minute, then softly growling and barking the next. I realized she could hear people outside our door and was protecting us (including Jake) from them!

The next night, Jake was the one to bark and "protect" us, maybe he felt like she was trying to get one up on him.

Aren't they the best? I wouldn't trade her for anything in the universe. Jessica
