Boxer Buddy
hello everyone
i did some searched of "jumping" and "aggressive jumping" but didnt find exactly what i was look for, so help!

cassius is 10 months old and while he has been a model puppy lately he seems to be going crazy, particularly with me as opposed to my husband.

Cassius lately jumst loves to jump on me- again and again- i know that is not meant aggressively but now he is doing it on our walks- this morning he pretty much had me against a fence jumping on me and biting on my sleeve- he really likes sleeves! last night he was desperate to get ahold of my sweatshirt sleeves

i tell him in a strong voice, Off and No jumping but he is not responding. We have gotten to a point where my husband really needs to yell at him to sit to make him stop. Obviously we would prefer to figure out a better way to handle this so that I can feel in control of the situation when out with cassius alone.

he has been through one level of puppy kindergarten and we will be enrolling him in the next level soon so that may help but i would love to know your thoughts.

thanks!

At 10 months he might be trying to test the waters so to speak reguarding his place in the pecking order of the home. The fact that your hubby can get him to stop by putting him in a sit lets you know that he respects that authority....but not yours yet.

I would stop the walks immediatly when this starts and even if you have to practice by only walking back and forth in front of your house he will eventually come to realize that when he does this the walk ends. Remember to praise and or treat when he is walking nicely and build up his confidence and he will soon learn what is acceptable.

He needs to respect every member of the household, not just hubby. My girl will listen to me way sooner than she will listen to my hubby when it comes to commands but I work with her daily and he gets to benefit from my hard work.

Of course he is still a puppy and is just trying to push the limits to see what he can get away with.

Keep working with him, be patient and persistant.

I agree. Stop whatever you're doing with him when he starts jumping. Take his fun away and he'll learn not to jump on you soon enough.

One way is to turn and ignore the dog. If you give him attention for jumping, which is what he wants in doing it, good or bad attention (yelling, is still attention to a dog), he will continue the behavior because he's getting what he wants from jumping. Take away the attention and he will stop jumping because there is no satisfaction in it for him.

One method I have used for very serious jumpers (and don't often recommend this) is when the dog jumps up I take a step forward, essentially taking up the space where the dog will land from his jump. This will cause the dog to fall on his back and he sure won't like that. And, he gets it that it is something the JUMPING caused, not you causing him pain. That is very important.

Good luck.

I have the same problem but im a little confused. My partner is the dominant one in terms of obedience etc however she CONTINUOUSLY jumps up on him but not me. She will ignore me, walk all over me when im sitting down and all the other things boxers do but she wont jump at me. He does tell her off and has a very firm hold over her but is there a playful reason why she is doing it? I tried putting my knee out when she jumped and this stopped her and i also used a container with stones in it that i shook at her when she jumped and this was very effective so maybe you might want to try either of the two. I dont believe i was hurting her when i put my knee up, i just let her know that if she wishes to get attention by jumping, thats what she gets back!
Also, when she greets either of us she wags her bottom very hard and tends to 'crab' up. She twists her body in a half circle and walks funny (showing us her head and rear end)..she looks very funny doing this but is it a common boxer thing?

Very common! That's the kidney bean.

Same thing

Our boxer Flexi who is 13 months old does the same exact things that everyone is describing. She does the "kidney bean" when we get home cause she is sooo excited to see us (even if we are gone for 5 minutes!)! ha ha She also listens to my husbands authority more than mine. I try and deepen my voice with her and that usually gets her to listen. I also will go into another room or walk into our closet and shut the door if she is jumping up at me and won't stop. I stay in there for a couple minutes until I hear her take a big sigh, which she usually does cause she is a big drama queen, and I'll come back out....whenever I do this she has usually calmed down and will stop her jumping. I also make every attempt to show her that she is not the "alpha" in our house. She is not allowed on the couch or on the beds and I always walk in and out of doors ahead of her (this was direction from our trainer). Another good technique that our trainer had us practice with our boxer is if she is pulling, you do an about face (just turn around and walk in the opposite direction) to let her know she always has to be next to me or behind me or we will turn around. We've also taught her that when we stop walking she automatically sits...we taught her this by using the coaker collar and gently raising the collar up to move her chin up and saying "sit". Now we don't even have to tell her to sit, she knows that when we stop her job is to sit. I can't tell you how important training is for a boxer since they are so strong and stubborn.....we enjoy walking her now cause she doesn't pull! I also make her sit if another dog is walking by us or a person is because like all other boxers she wants to go up to everyone and play so I'll just have her sit there until the person passes us. Even with training though obviously dogs aren't perfect....we still can't get her to stop wanting to chase squirrels when we walk her!!

Good luck and Patience!!!

In addition to your "No" and "Off" commands, when you boxer jumps try turning your backside towards him.

It's natural body language that dogs recognize as "I don't like that. Stop. Back off. Etc."

Ever notice how dogs do the same thing at the dog park when other larger, more dominant dogs chase them?

Same idea, and it worked great for me.

Good luck!

This is great to hear that some others are having almost the same issue as us. Jada is a great girl, listens well to both my wife and I, but just recently (last 2 weeks) she has started with this jumping thing. Sometimes we are walking, in the house or playing in the backyard. It's like she just changes into a different dog for a few minutes, she jumps up at my sleeves, biting and growling. I have tried igoring her, turning my back to her and giving her some strick commands, "Off, No Jumping, No biting", but she'll continue to do this for a few minutes. Sometimes she listens to my commands, other times she just stops and goes about her business like nothing happened, or she'll continue to do this for a little bit. If she continues, I pick her up and hold her in my arms like a football and stroke her head. This calms her after a few seconds, but she is little right now, I can not imagine doing this with her when she gets bigger :) In the end, she goes back to being her loving self, but what gives. She is 5 months now and she going to get fixed on the 17th of this month so I was hoping this might calm her down a little bit. I just can not see why she would start doing this all of a sudden and act the way she does, totally out of character for her. Like some of the previous post suggested, it might be that she is challenging authority or something, it really seems that way, but why start now :(

TIA
