seperation anxiety?????????

I have a boxer who is 8 months old.Every time I come home from work he has destroyed his bedding and has broken out of his kennel.Today he did it even though i had a bungy cord holding the door closed.It is one of those big metal crates.He has broken the lock off totally.I don't know what to do .Has anyonelse had this problem?

Sounds like SA to me.

How does he get out??? You can use zip ties to reinforce the crate door. That worked for me when Conner somehow managed to collapse the crate.

You can try removing his bedding to control the problem for now. You might try Comfort Zone (google it or search here for it) for him, as well, to help relieve the stress.

Frozen kongs are also helpful at keeping them busy for a while.

Most importantly, remove his collar when he's in the crate so that he doesn't accidently get caught and strangle himself.

He puts his paws between the holes in the door of the crate and pulls the door back and forth.Now if he goes in the crate when I am home he is fine goes in there and falls asleep.I leave for work you can hear him barking outside . He barks so loud the whole neighborhood would hear him.I just don't know what to do.When I came home today he had peed on the carpet and chewed up my daughters toys .Who knows how long he was out .My husband leaves at 2pm I get home at 530pm.

Definately sounds like SA to me. Some people say leaving the radio or T. V. on helps. Also there is a plug in "Comfort Zone" . It did not help my dog with her firework phobia but I have read other members who had luck with it.

Tyler has broken out of his crate twice now. I think it's a mixture between seperation anxiety and boredom. Luckily, nothing has been destroyed the two times he's gotten out and he hasn't had any accidents in the house. I think he is trying to prove to me that he can be trusted out of the crate!

How much exercise does he get before he goes into the crate? If you can take if for a nice long walk before he goes in he shouldn't have as much energy and will hopefully be more calm and just lay down. Also, how long is he in the crate for? Maybe he needs to be let out at some point for some more exercise.

My Chopper is about a year old and has the same problem. I went to a trainer and she suggested putting them in their crates and let them get comfortable. Then move a little further away, and let them get comfortable again. Do this a little at a time until you are going all the way outside for a few minutes at a time. I just got this advise, and have yet to try it...but I hope it will help you!
