Separation Anxiety?

I've read through some posts on separation anxiety but I haven't really seen anything that addresses my situation.

A bit of history, I work at home and Makena usually has someone at home with her. She's never really been left for long periods of time. My husband and I lived in San Diego up until a year ago. At that time we moved to IL and adopted two young boys aged 7 and 8. Before moving, Makena had no issues when we'd leave.

Since moving, when we'd leave she's started to chew things up but it would only happen sporadically. At first it was just things that belonged to the boys. Then it moved to things that were household items - like the remote control. In the past couple of weeks, it's gotten a lot worse. She's now chewing or stealing something each time we leave. If the boys leave a shoe or hat lying around, she'll take it while we're away and lick it incessantly. (but she doesn't chew it - she only really chews hard things - toys mostly).

She doesn't chew up furniture or doors or anything like that. And she doesn't disturb pillows on the couches or anything.

Can anyone give me advice on how to handle her anxiety when we leave? We all say to her "Bye Makena, we'll be back soon." when we leave as I heard that it helps if we say the same thing to her like that - sort of a code word so she knows that we'll always be back.

Please don't suggest that we crate her as it's just not an option. When she was little, we tried to crate train her but it's really a horrible experience for her. Being in her crate causes more anxiety than if we leave for an hour or so.

Also, she has PLENTY of her own toys to chew on and chew sticks. She also gets lots of attention from everyone in the family and gets plenty of exercise. She's wonderful otherwise and she's incorporated fully as the third child in our family (but please don't tell her as she considers herself the first child ;-)). We're just not sure what to do when we leave and she's missing us. We want to make sure that she's at ease - the things she chews are incidental.

Thank you!

What about finding a spot in your house to block off with a baby gate? I really wish I had some other ideas for you, why did you have such a horrible experience crating her?

I agree with blocking off an area for her, but I understand where you are coming from. Petey(our 1st) would squeeze himself out of the crate, it was horrible as I witnessed it one or two times, and he too "ate" things when we went away. The only thing that seemed to help him was more exercise and more attention from us. I know that you stated that she gets enough exercise, but perhaps her level of energy is more than she lets on. Good luck and keep us posted:)

Crate Training

I don't really know why we had such a hard time crating her. We did everything we could to make it seem like a safe place for her. We bought the appropriate size crate, we would put treats in there, we'd throw her ball in there so she'd get it, we put her favorite blanket in there (all while we were home so she'd get used to it)... you name it, we tried it. But in order to get her to go in the crate, we'd have to coax her in. She'd never go in willingly. And the entire time she was in there while we were away, she'd bark and yelp and salivate. It was truly traumatic. Even now, if I bring the crate out, she'll run and hide.

Because she didn't like it, we just never pushed the issue with her. She's a really good girl and she never goes to the bathroom in the house and before we moved, she never had a problem with chewing or anything.

I honestly think this issue that she's having right now is because of the boys. It's mainly their things that she gravitates towards. And with all the reading I've done, it appears that maybe she thinks she needs to protect them and when they're not around, it causes her distress. I just don't know how to fix it.

She gets way more exercise now with two active boys around than she did when she was a puppy and only had my husband and I to walk her. I did wonder the same thing, though. Maybe I'll get her to do burns in the back yard more every day and see if that helps. Thanks!
