Selecting a show puppy

Hi All!

I think I've got this message in the right place!

I'm hoping that someone here could suggest a good link on the net that has photos/diagrams to help select a show puppy. In Ivor Ward Davies boxer book (i think its that one) there are excellent diagrams for about 6 or 7 weeks but unfortunately I can't find a copy of it :(

So if anyone knows a website, or could send me some scans or diagrams that would be awesome.

I've been showing for a few years so have a good feel for the standard, and have chosen a really nice show pup before but it'd be great to have a refresher/reminder.

In particular I'd like information on the head (I've pretty much got the bod sorted) I'm embarrassed to say I know I should be looking for a "hook" on the nose but am puzzled as to what that is. What kind of profile should I be looking for as they grow, prior to 8 weeks? I know a lot of what "not" to get but ... well... so advice would be great!

Show Potential?

Hi Christina!

Thanks for your reply :) I've been showing boxers for a few years, but had only chosen one show pup (she turned out well for me) I've also shown English pointers occaisionally. I've also shown a Frenchie (bulldog) and would LOVE to get another nice one to show, but its a lot of work to be dedicated to more than one breed.

Since I posted the last message I now have two new girls that are around 10 weeks old, a plain brindle and a flashy brindle. They are both really pretty, my plain I will probably start showing from baby puppy (4 months) my flashy girl will be slower to mature so I'll wait till she's over 12 months. Takes a lot of pressure off making a decisionearly to wait for them to mature.

I didn't have much luck finding useful diagrams online, but was very happy to get a copy of Ivor Ward-Davies book from the UK. It has great diagrams!

If you like I could email you a photo of the girls ;-)

Oh heck, that is what I get for not looking at where you are located. You are in New Zealand. I have actually shown French Bulldogs as well. Wonderful little breed. Definitely fun to show.

As for Frenchies, I found them challenging to say the least! They certainly have a mind of their own ;-)
