Heathy- I just read through your posts, haven't been on much the past couple of months, recuperating from being royally sick. I'm sorry you and Tigger are going through this. I know firsthand and it stinks.
How is Tigger doing since being put on the phenobarb? My 3yr old male Dozer is also epileptic and on phenobarb and potassium bromide. We've been going through seizures since late last spring. Our vet started him on the pheno but his seizures weren't being controlled enough so after about 5 months, potassium bromide was added. He's been on this combo about 4 months now. Knock on wood,we haven't had a seizure for just about 40 days. HIs last one was the first week of January, and the vet bumped up his pheno. One thing to keep in mind,it takes a couple of weeks before the pheno reaches the "therapeutic level" ,you'll see Tigger stagger, stumble, pace, pace and pace some more. His water intake will more than likely increase. I have to cut Dozer's water off at 6pm religiously and just give him small amounts every so often.
I also learned, through the pharmacist that makes his potassium bromide-it's a compounding pharmacy as Dozer is on a very high dose-that it is better to give the pheno and hour before any food. It works better on an empty stomach. I usually give it to him in a little peanut butter. Once I started giving him his meds that way, he did alot better. Once the potassium was thrown in,I have to give him pepcid as it upsets his stomach and it makes him bubble up.
Don't be afraid to call the vet if you think the dose might be too high. But give it at least a whole week to work into Tigger's system. I hate to see our babies have a seizure, but I sit right beside him and talk to him in as calm a voice as I can. The funny thing,I have another male,Bownser who is almost 5 that will let me know when Dozer is about to have a seizure. He'll come and get me and bring me back to Dozer.
I also keep a rescue dose of Valium,it's liquid in a syringe,to give him in the event he has a really bad seizure.Fortunately,I've only had to do that once. Giving a wily boxer boy a syringe in the butt was not a fun prospect for me,and he couldn't figure out why Mom was holding onto his butt!!
My vet has told me that if his seizures don't come under control,we will have to look at other possible causes, but I try not to think about that just now. He's doing great and is a happy, rowdy boy. I did also change his food. I put him on Natural Balance as there are no preservatives corn,soy,wheat-as allergies can also play a part in seizures. As far as heartworm,he is on Interceptor, because the ivermectin in it isn't good for a seizure dog.
If I can be any help, just let me know. Now that I'm feeling better,I'll be back on the boards. Got lots of stuff to catch up on
