Seasonal alopecia on tail?

Hi All, My new addition who is 7 months old. Recently started losing hair on her tail. This has also included biting and nipping at the spot. The area of loss has turned black, appears to be spreading at a slow rate and seems to have a red outline around the black. Doesnt appear dry or scaley. My question is does seasonal alopecia occur in places other than the flank? I have included two pictures in my gallery. Keep in mind when viewing the tail has been shaved to the base to better see the area and if its spreading. I would appreciate anyone advice from anyone who has experienced this. To give an opinion on your problem - I'd be very surprised if the problem is SFA. Reasons being that (a) the location is highly atypical (flank alopecia almost always begins symetrically on the flanks, spreads along the torso, but only after that - and in a minority of cases anyway - affects other areas), (b) your dog's age - most SFA sufferers are 4+ years old, it's uncommon in puppies, (c) SFA doesn't itch, (d) SFA doesn't have a red outline around the patches of hair loss. In fact, there is only one thing in your description that sounds at all like SFA, and that's the blackening of the skin. Thus, I'd be surprised if that were the problem. It seems more likely to me that it's going to be some sort of mites, fleas or possibly fungus - but you need a vet to take a look and adjudicate on that.

Thank you for the response, I have resubmitted the photos if that helps. A trip to the vet I think is in order, just wanted to make sure it wasnt something routine ie allergies/seasonal hair loss etc.

Saw the photos, not a clue what that could be :confused: Definitely does not look like seasonal flank alopecia though. Best to get it checked out by a vet. Keep us posted, I'd be interested to hear the diagnosis.

Vet Results

So, just came back from the vets and thought I would update for anyone who saw the pictures and was curious. Ends up it was localized Demodex. So she is on a topical for the mites and antibotics for any secondary infections. Thanks again and hopefully these pictures can help someone in the future.
