injured cornea
Hi, I just went through a major eye injury with my 8 yr. old Nuker. We don't know how she injured it but the vet said perhaps some caustic chemical dripped into her eye (?) or else she could have scratched it on any of a million things. We did antibiotics for a few days but my vet said Boxers notoriously have a difficult time healing eye injuries. After a couple of days he did a procedure on her eye that involved 'scoring' (in kind of a criss-cross pattern) the whole cornea to encourage cell growth.
Well, this procedure worked very well as the cells grew back quickly - although she had to wear the hilarious (for me) and scary/embarassing (for her) cone around her face when not supervised.
Unfortunately, somehow all the trauma to the eye caused an additional issue in the lower quadrant of her eye - the blood vessels all got swollen and that healed area of the cornea and other part of eye (don't remember correct anatomic words) looked TERRIBLE! The vet was really worried and I totally thought she would lose her beautiful brown eye. To add to the stress I had to go out of town for 5 days on a business trip. Long story short (sorry rambling on) - her combination antibiotics and steriod drops cured whatever was wrong (saving me $$$ for veterinary ophthamologist). And, she is all better now!!! (possible loss of vision in 10- 20% of her lower eye)
Advice to others: Find a vet you TRUST, and if there is any kind of eye problem, get it seen right away!
