My baby Jake took a trip to vet this past Saturday. I got up to take him out about 7am and he looked funny. I was not quite awake yet and I was looking at him with blurry eyes so I thought I was seeing things. When we came into the light his eyes were almost swollen shut. He had whelps all over his body! I just started crying. I had never seen that in a dog. I took him in and they said he probably got bitten outside by something. He wasn't breathing well at all. I have to admit...I really thought he was going to die. They kept him over night and gave him benadryl and steroids. He did great! He is back at home snoring and passing his lovely gases that we missed so much!!!!

Glad to hear Jake is doing well. Did the vet give any clue as to what might have bit him. You'll have some funky bugs out there in the Lone Star State, that much I remember while in DFW a few years back. I can only imagine how you felt, I darn near had a fit when I found a tick on Kilbane's chest in Jan. I too miss not hearing the snoring, the gas, well, I'll pass. No pun intended.

That happen to Cleo at about 5 months. We woke up in the middle of the night to find our boxer had turned into a sharpei. We quickly went to the ER vet for help. It was an allergic reaction to something. Bug bite, chemicals, food. Not sure what. They gave her a shot and sent her home. We caught it before her throat closed up. Since then she has had a few reactions. I have gotten better about seeing them come on. My vet told me to give her 1 tablet of benedryl at the start and then bring her in. It apparently is not uncommon in boxers.

That happened to my Abby one time. Her eyes were almost swollen shut and she was having trouble breathing. Took her to the vet and he gave her a shot. He said she probably was stung by a bee or bit by a spider.

Glad to hear that Jake is better. Benedryl can be a wonder drug at times. I try to keep some handy at all times.

Glad he's doing better! That would be so scary. My stepson lives in San Antonio and his boxer ate a bee which stung him. Duke's face swelled up and he collapsed on the floor and couldn't get up. He was fine after some benedryl, but they were very scared. Benedryl is on-hand at all times at their house because Duke can't seem to figure out bees don't set well with him!

Wow! Glad Jake is okay! definitely think you should keep some benedryl on hand--either name brand or generic (diphenhydramine)--the dose is 1 mg per 1 lb of body weight. You can use tablets or liquid, whichever is easier for you. I prefer the liquid because I feel like I can get it in my dog quicker and easier than a pill--especially in situations where is he/she is swollen and having difficulty breathing/swallowing, but that is my personal opinion, pills work well too. You can buy a dosing syringe or ask your vet for one to measure the liquid if you choose it.
