scar tissue on docked tail

Odin has what appears to be a lot of scar tissue on his tail where it was docked. It's looked that way since we got him a few months ago. It's very thick and not particularly attractive but I really haven't paid much attention to it.

Several days ago he started biting and licking at his tail. I checked it out a little closer tonight and it's reddish (was black before) and seems to be oozing something. I could tell it bothered him when I touched it.

My last Boxer mix had a docked tail, don't ask me why since she was a mix, but there was not any scar tissue on it. I have relatives who used to have a Boxer and they said they had to have their dogs scar tissue removed by a vet. Does that sound right? Anybody ever have this problem? He'll be seeing a vet Wednesday but in the meantime I wondered if this was a common.

My Duchess has that too...on the end of her tail there is a place where no hair grows. She freaks out and starts going in circles tryin to bite it...its funny to watch and it doesnt seem to hurt her so i just let it go

Just try to get him busy doing something else if he starts chewing to clear it up, or take him to the vet

You don't want it getting infected. I would take him to the vet and have it checked out. It sounds like it was poorly docked. :(

have a vet look at he tail it should not have discharge. chloe has a bald thick spot also on the end of her nub- where maxi's you cant see. they really cropped her tail barely left anything just looks like a big lump.

i'd make sure to mention it to the vet and have him check it out. you don't want it to get infected and ecalate into something worse.
scar tissue is unfortunately becoming too common in boxers due to poor docking quality. it shouldn't harm them, but there is always an exception.

Odin's tail was bleeding this morning when he got up so I convinced my vet he needed to be seen today instead of Wednesday. He really didn't have any idea why it was oozing/bleeding. Thought maybe Odin bumped it/damaged it somehow and now won't leave it alone. He's got some other skin issues right now so maybe the two problems could be related somehow.

He gave me some anti-bacterial, anti-itch meds to put on it. I haven't noticed him licking it much today but I think he's just getting sneaky and doing it when I'm not watching, .

He goes back next week to have his thyroid tested and the vet will see how his tail is doing then.

He also said I could try putting that liquid band-aid stuff on it to try to protect it since Odin's probably not going to leave any other bandage on it. Has anyone ever used that on an animal and did it work?

Asia's tail was cut too short and she has some scar tissue on hers as well, but it doesn't bother her a bit! It is about an inch long and then it becomes covered by her hair!

I hope your baby and his tail are feeling better soon!

How long should the tail be dock? Should it be on the 2nd or the 3rd joint of the tail or much longer?
