Scabbing around neck from playing..

Clavin plays with a few dogs that love to grab his jowls and loose skin around his neck and ears. It's all in play and he doesn't yelp or anything it's just the way these dogs play with him. I guess that is one disadvantage of having all that extra skin in those area's.. easy to grab a hold of.

What has happened though is he (Clavin) now has these little bumps all around his neck and ears. I know it is just some scabbing as a result of these playful "bites" but I want to make sure nothing becomes infected. These dogs don't break the skin but rather playfully grab on and either pull and/or twist his skin/fur.

I just washed the area's out with an antiseptic but was wondering if anybody had any ideas on what I could put on after that might help with the healing process as it relates to the scabs. What about Bag Balm? The marks are coming up almost like little pimples under the skin.

Am I just over reacting?

Thanks as always for the great responses.

Millie and Ozzy play really rough with each other ALL the time and Millie is usually always covered in scabs (around the neck, ears, jowels, and then scratches on her body too). They never seem to yelp and be in pain when they are playing and so I just assumed it was normal. I've never really treated them before, except for the big ones I'll usually put neosporin or a similar cream (I have one from the vet) on them to help them heel faster.

Hope this helps!

lol - read my posts about 'naughty " & sam ... and the issues the same as urs !! Our new puppy would not stop chewing on him.

sam looked like a fighting dog ..and was scaring ... puppy teeth are SHARP !

here is what the vet said to do ..

like other posters .. washed his neck & ears ( several times a day) applied antiseptic as necessary ( deeper ones ) spray works best
applied "bag balm" i bought a cheaper version ( moo cream) on the ears and scabs on his neck ( he loves it ) daily - maybe a little extra in the evening , if he keeps staring at the jar on the end table - lol
you will find that you will want to give him a good bath washing every cpl days ( we just wash the chest era as to not dry out his coat ) with a good gentle scrubbing , this will wash of some of the cream and break loose any ready to fall off scabs.

( really thats it ! )

i am assuming that his scratches are as bad as sams where - you might not need to do ALL of this , but wanted to share encase.

and things are starting to heal , his ears look much better , but there is going to still be some scaring.

this was a 50.00 vet trip advice ~~ enjoy !

My Boxer boy gets them from my GSD all the time. I don't do anything to them and knock on wood we haven't had any issues. I've found they just heal up on their own without issue.

Thanks to all for your great responses and suggestions. I have some Bag Balm that has been rarely used so I think I will apply some at night before Clavin hits the sack or in his case the bed ( literally).

He doesn't almost seem to mind having his neck and face chewed on. I think I would have a problem if somebody was doing that to me but what do I know?

I will continue to monitor the area's and make sure they are washed out at least a few times a week.

Havoc gets these every once in awhile from daycare from other dogs. If its on the neck and behind the ear like my puppy try putting Polysporin Complete (Its the antibacterial stuff you can find in any pharmacy in a tube). Only put this stuff where it cant be licked though cause no puppy should ever lick it. If you get the gold one its amazing how quickly it heals on dogs. Usually it works over night when I put it on the morning then night. Tried lots of other stuff but I know this works wonders and I dont have to worry about infections (which she has gotten in the past from this so I have tired many things).

Our three get them all of the time, as did our previous two. We just let them heal on their own unless it happens to be a really red belly scratch..then we cleanse and apply a little neosporin before bed.
By the way, Marcottm..Havoc is a GREAT name for a boxer!!!
