Greetings all. I just wanted to say first and foremost thank you for being here. I found a Boxer at a shelter in Martinsville, IN named Joe Boxer through Petfinder.com. I don't know what it was but I was captivated by the picture of smart, but so sad eyes peering from beyond bars. The note stated Joe was surrendered by an owner who was moving to an apartment which didn't allow pets, along with a 'buddy' a Boston Terrier Mix.

I didn't think twice, all I knew is that I was going to get Joe. So I called the shelter Wednesday afternoon and inquired if they would adopt to someone from out of state (I'm in Chicago) and 2. if Joe Boxer was still available. Lucky for Joe, a rescue group had noticed him as well and was coming to pick him up. I asked the lady at the shelter if she knew if he was going into a foster home or if they had a 'forever' home lined up for him. She stated she would have to find out and call me back, if they were only putting him into a foster home he would be available for adoption. At this point I was so excited but didn't want to get my hopes up in case he already had a forever home lined up. 30 mins. later i received a call stating he was available, I said I was on my way, left my job, got home, changed clothes, hopped in the car and headed down the highway towards Indianapolis.

3.5 hrs. later I had made it and got to meet Joe. He was SKINNY, very skinny, and dusty and not in the greatest shape, but he was alert, interested, curious and so very, very friendly and to my surprise I was informed, housetrained. When I sat down to fill out the adoption application he buried his head on my lap while i scratched his nose and I knew we'd be just fine. He's a great car dog, sleeping most of the way on the long 3.5 hour drive back home.

Joe seemed weak and hungry but would not eat dry kibble and the wet gave him the runs, so I scoured your boards and found the 'bland' diet of rice and chicken. I have fed it to him since Friday and he has improved IMMENSELY over this last weekend. I know it hasn't been long but it's like Joe's been here forever. His manners are impeccable, and he seems to be adjusting well. I just want to say thank you Boxer World dot.com for being here. I don't know what I would've done without finding the rice and chicken recipe. We'll be fattening him right on up!

I take him to the veterinarian next week for a thorough exam. I'm sure he will need some ointment for his eyes (the left one is too gooey for comfort and seems to be irritating him) I also need to figure out what shots he needs for his dog tags and he has some sores on his ears I would like to have looked at. I also need to have him tested for heartworm and whatever else may not have been done at the shelter. I am looking forward to a wonderful future with Joe!!!

woo hooo!

Oh, good story. Thanks for saving Joe. You will have many fun years together. How old is Joe? I also have two rescues and wouldn't have it any other way! Too many babies out there who deserve a forever home!

Pictures

I tried to upload a picture into the gallery...but i don't know if it worked...i have 4 new pictures of Joe!!!

The shelter thinks Joe is 5 years old. I have upped his vet appointment to this Saturday as i believe he may have conjunctivitis in his right eye and don't want him to be uncomfortable any longer than necessary. He does like a warm cloth wipe around it, he gets those in the morning and evening.
