Sams BORED ~ so am I

ok - we are bored with basic training......

i am sure we can work on it MORE ~ Sam still has a cpl issues ~ BUT its getting old , sit , stay , wait , easy .. yaddy yaddy

he is incredible when he is "working" if he has his vest on , he generally is a doll. So that brings me to my next awesome idea !! he he .. DH thinks i am nuts ......

BUT ~ i looked at agility - dont really think it is for us , Sam is super dog reactive - and i am a "bit" over weight , and just cant see me running around doing that ! even though might be good for me !!

so after some looking around i decided on 'cart pulling " just a small cart or wagon ( some thing my grandson - 7 mo ) could ride in , kinda thing.

i have trained horses so i think i can do this -

for those that dont know us :
Sam is almsot 3
healthy , good weight ( a bit thin still though )
no health issues


i am just looking for new activities for training ~ since our foster came , training has slacked off - and sam is showing it. acting out a bit & just being annoying & demanding !

breazie goes to her forever home in the morning ! so lots of free time now !

any advice is welcome ! from the correct harness to "modifying" a wagon would be great ~or just telling me i am not crazy !!!!!

There is no reason that you can't teach Sam to pull a cart. You just need the proper harness and a cart. Here is a link to get you started:How to Build a Dog Pull Cart | eHow.com

Pulling a cart sounds like fun. I was going to suggest weight pull to you. I want to build a cart for Johann now, he's been bored lately as well.

What about rally obedience? Johann has had a lot of fun with it and it's very minimal running....it's like competitive obedience only focused on fun and teamwork.

thought about this all day at work & looked a bunch of plans up last night & at lunch ~ building one MIGHT be a bit to much for me !! - lets see ... i own a drill , 2 screw drivers, and a staple gun !!


i also priced the kind of wheels i would want ~ 12" FAT ones - for a comfy ride for my grandson - bike shop tells me that will run around 100.00

so ... plan "b" i just looked up wagons - the radio flyer ATW would work great ! would just have to modify the tongue and attach the shafts & walla !!

i will keep you guys posted on our progress ......... or lack of it -

Just make sure Sam is trained before you put your grandson in the wagon :D

ohhh MOST def !!! i think we will work on training this winter ( even have plans on a sled ! ) and if all goes well , we should be ready by horse show season in the spring !

i think i am going to use KUSH as our training "dummy" and see how that goes ~~~ LOL

When I was a kid, my Dad made harnesses for the dogs and we had them pull us on our sleds. The wagon did not work so well becuse it would keep rolling when the dog stopped and bump them in the hind legs, not a problem with the sleds.

Oh, the memories. Kippy enjoyed it so much we would take her tobogganing with us. She would happily pull the toboggan up the hill, but there was no way she would ride on it. She would run alongside of us on the ride down, and occaisionally bark her approval while grabbing a mouthful of snow now and then. At the bottom, we would attach the toboggan to her harness and let her pull the toboggan up the hill. It was not a big hill, and she was always happy and ready to go, so I don't think she was overworked.

Just make sure the cart or wagon does not roll into the back of the dog. Our dogs did not like that, so we abandoned dog powered wheel transport fairly quickly.

ahh , no worries ~~ sams wagon design , not only having the " u hitch" adjustable , it also has "shafts" which work as brakes , just like a horse cart. i based the design on the carts we use with the horses.

but thanks for the watm fuzzy memories ~~ ... I remember when the girls where little & our pitty pulled them on a sled ! ( with just a leash tyed to each side of his collar ! ) poor baby !! but the girls where less then 2 yo SO DIDNT WEIGH MUCH !! LOL

I actually just purchased a pull harness, for my boys ( only got one depending on how well they do with it ) but I'm hoping to be able to get them to pull my daughter in a wagon. The horse buggy idea is great, keep them from getting rear ended. My daughter is only 3 months so I got a bit of time, I guess I will use my little nephews as guinea pigs...

I got the idea to try this out because I had an old tire swing that broke and it was just laying in the yard (it has about a foot and a half of rope still connected to the tire). I look out the window and the dogs are dragging it around the yard. It is like they almost play a game with it. It was really random because it has been sitting their for months, and now all of a sudden it has sparked their interest. So I'm hoping it will be fun to pull their little sister.
