Well, it's been over three weeks now so I hope it's safe to tell Sammy's story.....
My gf has a gal she works with that was in a part of town visiting her bf. She told us about a puppy that lived next door and was in terrible shape. Her boyfriend confirmed that the dog had been outside all winter, which was below zero many times this year. There was a dog house there but the chain the puppy was tied to wasn't long enough to reach the house. They said the dog was rarely fed, had no water and was never brought into the house or played with. The boyfriend had gotten home that afternoon and the dog was hanging off of the back porch by his chain standing on his tip toes to stay alive. The boyfriend unwrapped him and told us he was in bad shape.
Our friend and I decided it was time to act so we went on an early morning "James Bond" mission and brought home this little boy. I was horrified by the condition of this puppy. He had very little hair left on his body, just big patches of scaly irritated skin. When I went to take off his collar I could not get my fingers under it and saw that it has started to grow into his neck. The smell was so bad that we could hardly stand it getting him home. He was so skinny that all of his vertabrae stuck out of his spine like a dinasaur and his ribs looked like a skeleton. Needless to say he was a mess.
The bright side is after 3 trips to the vet his skin is healing up and furry peach fuzz is growing in to the patches. He has gained 8lbs. so far and is thriving everyday. He had food aggression issues to begin with but with patience he is getting better. I guess it makes a difference if you know your going to get fed each day. Katie (boxer mix) is in love with her little brother and I have never seen such a loving little puppy in my life. The vet thinks he's about 7 months old and has no idea what kind of a mix he is. All I know is it's the best thing that has happened to us for a long time.
I just wish everytime the doorbell rang I didn't freak thinking the cops were waiting for me!:(
