Same Sex Adoptions

I hoping to gain some understanding.... I am interested in adopting a rescue but our local group will not consider an adoption because I am interested in a female dog and already have an older female boxer. They have a "no same sex adoption" policy. I just struggling to understand the reasoning. I've had multiple male dogs in the house at same time growing up (we always took in the strays) and currently dog sit females without any problems. I feel like it is the right time to start considering a new addition to our family, but really want another female. Can anyone provide some insight?

Thanks in advance -- Rena'

Our rescue will not place two females together either. It can be very problematic. We will place two males though. Female boxers tend to be the least likely combo to get along. Sometimes it works but when it doesn’t it gets really ugly (females don’t fight to establish dominance they fight to get rid of the other i.e. they will fight to the death). I think just about every Boxer rescue I know of has the same policy.

Males fight to breed females fight to breathe!! 2 females can be a terrible mix so rescues dont risk it. Bitch fights are not pretty and are very hard if not impossible to stop.

Our rescue has the same policy. I think most Boxer rescues do. The tricky thing with females is that they may get along for days, weeks, months, or even years but if they stop getting along, Boxer girls do NOT mess around. They will fight until one of them is dead or gone. If we place a female in a home with another female and it doesn't work out, obviously it will be "our" dog that will be ousted and come back to rescue. We'd rather place dogs where they've got better odds at a successful adoption.

same with my rescue ...

its already been said a cpl times !
we could not even do play dates with other females with a recent foster ... she was so afraid that " evil dog " was gunna take her place .. 80# dogs fighting is not fun ... YOU get hurt !

Thank you. I will just wait to grow our pack. Selfishly, I was hoping my girl might be able to help with training and the ways of our house. On the positive side, we won't rock the boat and will continue to spoil our "only child" through her senior years.

Any reason you wouldn't consider a male boxer?

I've had both male and female dogs and for whatever reason have seemed to bond more with my females. I'm also hoping to stay on the lower end of boxer size. Roxy is about 55lbs and that is about perfect size for our home - we live in town home with limited space (but exercise is not problem because we have 20 acres about 20 mins away that gives plenty of romping room).

Roxy is my first boxer - had German Shepard's for a number of years - but now hooked on the boxer breed. Switched after we lost our last shepard - we had move to this townhouse and it just seemed too small for a dog of her size.

Just did not realize two females such an issue. We have several friends with female boxers - they all play together frequently and we "dog sit" for each other during vacations and such. Guess we have been fortunate (& maybe naive) because we have not had any problems.

Very glad to have all the expertise this forum provides - have learned so much from this site.

Logic out the window

Well - throw all that logic out the window. Adopted a little boy from our local rescue yesterday!!

Was dropping of supplies for the Joplin, MO Humane Society (to help with pets lost from tornado) at our doggie daycare -- long story short they were fostering a little boy boxer. Couldn't help myself and had to look....now he is sleeping with head on my feet as I type this up. He's getting along with my Roxy and Vinny the cat, like a champ! Will post pictures soon as we settle on a name.
