Sad Zak.

I'm not very happy with myself or the vet nurse right now. Zaks' stitches have gone bad and he's in pain. The vet nurse looked at him this afternoon and said he'd be okay just put the elizabethan collar on him which I did, but now the wound is weeping a lot and very sticky. Either she or I should have thought of something to tide us over the holiday time just in case of something like this happening. So I feel like a real bad mom right now. the emergency vet has an answerphone on and we're away from Zak for half the day tomorrow.

I hope Zak feels better soon and can get that crazy collar off!! I think they hate that thing more than anything!

You're not a bad mom at all! You did the right thing in neutering and now you are keeping a close watch on him to make sure he recovers... you're an excellent mom .

I think I remember Zak was neutered the day after Willis... his incision started to look red, so the vet told us to wash it lightly with some warm water and a cloth and then put polysporin on it. Maybe you could ask about that???

Poor Zak, I hope you will be feeling better today.

Washing the incision with warm water and putting polysporin or neosprin should help, but if the discharge is smelly or thick I would head to the vet office. Good Luck.

Thanks everyone for your concern--we found the emergency vet and Zak is now on antibiotics and has an antiseptic wash for the infected area. Boy is he still so down in the mouth! So am I cos' we have to travel for lunch and he has to stay at home without us. He has Cinda to keep him company outside (good weather) and the other two dogs around the other side of the house. But I still feel stressed about it. Poor bubba. What a Christmas!!!

Infection?

When my boy was nuetered, his incision had hard lumps, turned red, and oozed, it turn out he had an allergic reaction to the stitches. Some antibiotics cleared up the infection quickly and he healed normally after that.

I know what you're saying there--Stella had trouble when she was spayed and the vet had to go in and redo the inside stitches because they did the same thing. I can already see a change in Zak so here's hoping a complete recovery and stitches out on Thursday as stated. The itching is driving him nuts though and I do feel for him.
