I just learned that one of the rescue Boxers that I helped placed was attacked & killed by Coyotes yesterday. I feel so awful for Lucy & her family. Lucy was originally a backyard dog that was given up by her 1st family because she had colitis. The family that adopted her were so awesome. It was one of those adoptions that you think "wow this dog just won the doggie lottery". In her new home all her health issues were cured & she was loved beyond belief. Her family is heartbroken beyond repair.

Yesterday she went out her doggie door at around 7:30am to go potty and after she did not return right away her family went to check on her. Sadly they found her under a tree already gone. I'm so in shock. She was a young, large sized dog. I know coyotes take cats & small dogs but I thought they were more opportunistic predators. I did not think they would prey on a 60ish lb dog that would give them a fight.

These Coyotes are getting more & more brave. We are even seeing them in our neighborhood which is a city / urban area. Please be careful with your pets.

Run Free Lucy...

I am so sorry to read of the passing of that poor rescue, my heart goes out to the family.

I am keeping a close eye on my Roxy, we saw a coyote across the street from our house about 2 weeks ago. We live in a completely residential suburb outside of Detroit. Small dogs and cats have been attacked, injured and killed.

Oh how sad...RIP sweet Lucy.
We have a bad coyote problem around here as well. Cody was attacked by one a few years ago and it was awful. My DH has killed several in the past two weeks...one we fear was rabid but have not found the body yet....I think it crawled way back in the woods before it died. I do have to say that since the recent bloodshed in the yard we have seen a bit less of them coming through.

How horrible! I can't even imagine what they must be feeling. You always think your own backyard is safe.

Coyotes

I live in Agua Dulce in north Los Angeles County. We have 22 acres and see coyotes every day. Your post really upset me. My old Scout (retriever) is 15 and dying. I've been worrying about him and coyotes because I'm afraid that they'll see that he's sick and attack him.

My son got me a little dog for Christmas. Little dogs don't last long out here. Buster only weighs 30 lbs. He's very submissive and fearful. He won't go outside by himself. He'll go with Scout or he'll go with me or the kids, but never alone and never leaves the pad.

But he loves Ryan's boxer mix, Dozer. They play together, sleep together, everything. Dozer decided to take a walk about yesterday and Buster went with him. We called and called. Finally we see both dogs on the hill behind my house. I know there are coyotes up there, I see them up there all the time. Buster is afraid of coyotes. When he hears them yipping, he runs and hides under the bed.

Big 'ol Dozer knocked down my screen door. I thought a young healthy, large dog like Dozer would be safe here. I wonder how many coyotes took your poor Lucy? It had to be at least two. When I see them, I never just see one. I always see two or three together. I think they hunt in small groups. Right now, they've got pups. I can hear them.

Wow, how sad! I am so sorry for Lucy, for her family, and for you.

Completely Boxer Crazy
I remember Lucys struggle, she suffered the same symptoms my Lucy did. She was very lucky to have lived the last part of her life with a family who loved and cared for her. Rest peacefully sweet angel.
