Sad but true...

When I had my girl in for her health check my vet asked if I remembered my boy's, Frazier, Mom's name. I said yes, her name is Abby. And she proceeded to tell me that Abby was scheduled for a caesarian delivery that night. Abby is eight years old and my boy, her pup, has severe SAS, epilepsy, and is hypothyroid :(! It was over five years ago when I called this so called breeder to let her know my boy was having syncope due to SAS and she told me "Well, we are done breeding Abby anyway". I was sick to my stomach to think of all the SAS pups that may have been born and to think this poor girl is still being forced to produce litters at her age (She had six last night). What is wrong wth people??????

It really is awful. I was scanning the classified ads of a local trade paper recently, and of course skimmed through the pets section. Of course, there were many byb selling boxer pups, but the ad that got my attention was this: "For sale: reverse brindle female boxer. Two years old. AKC registered. Makes big litters." It is absolutley disgusting.

I know that animal welfare laws need to change in this country as a whole, but in the south, especially in rural areas, such as the small town I live in, animal abuse and cruelty is out of control. Dog fighting, physical cruelty, backyard breeding, and puppy mills are at an all time high.

In my opinion, breeding practices should be limited by new, strict laws. Even if you just look at the overall situation as a financial burden, and completely ignore the obvious moral implications of animal abuse and overpopulation, much stricter laws of breeding practices and general pet ownership would help this country tremendously. Stray dogs, animal attacks, disease, and shelter overpopulation have put a financial burden upon our state, and yet it is completely ignored.

I feel so terrible thinking of all those tortured, overbred, underfed animals that people use to make a quick buck. Sadly, it doesn't look like it will stop any time soon because no one is going to make them stop. No one here even cares if an animal has adequate shelter, much less if some moron has 15 ads in the local paper, all for puppies from multiple litters.

I agree with this whole-heartedly. My Gertie was clearly overbred and Mindy at only a year old had already had one litter, my vet thinks maybe even two. It makes me so angry that my babies have gone through this. I hate to think of all the others out there going through the same thing and I would love to stop the heartless people that do things like this. Grrrrrr!!!

I've seen the results of byb and it is indeed sad...

Puppies are little innocents brought into the world by greedy people, with no thought to breed standards, just a fast buck..

I was recently talking to an owner of a white boxer, barely a year old, and she was planning to breed her as she is in her first heat...She also owns a lovely flashy fawn male.. I talked to her about the problems of first heat breeding, the health tests she should have before breeding her...and I hope I talked her out of it..

On a related note, when we bought our house(last Sept.) we were given the property restrictions, one of those being that we could not do any dog breeding/or selling of puppies on our property. I think that more communities should be responsible and sensible like ours.

It is sad all of the byb that are out there. It hurts my heart to think of all of hte poor innocent puppies that are sold for just money. And you know they aren't screening those homes to make sure it is a good environment for them either. :(

Its sad but its about the money there are to many byb out there!!!! What a difference even raising my dogs from a byb to a reputabble breeder way easier

Yes, and in the same vein everyone thinks I am nuts to be dissapointed that the owner and head vet at my vet clinic would not at least counsel people on these egregrious breeding habits. The vet that delivered all of the litters for this poor girl also treats my dog and knows full well the health problems he has. He was the one who told me Fraze would not "last the year", though Fraze and my fabulous cardiac vet showed him (Fraze will be six yearsold in December) Is it too much ask that a vet at least express his concern and at best refuse to continue to participate?? In my more jaded moments I can not help but think of the money he has made off me over the years treating Fraze and the money he has made on delivering these litters. I hate feeling that way and at this point think maybe I need to look for another vet clinic. Thanks for listening. This has been on my mind all week :(

I certainly believe that it is the duty of a vet to put an animal's welfare at the forefront of his priorities. There certainly seems to be a conflict of interest with your vet continuing to treat this breeder's overbred, sickly animals, without so much as batting an eye. He might not be able to legally control what the owner does, but he certainly can at least do his best to educate this person on the physical and phsychological effects the "breeding program" is having on the dogs. He certainly can refuse treatment to such a person based on moral obligation. I know that I would.

What if this was a pediatrician we were talking about? And what if someone was bringing their child in to be treated, and the child was showing signs of neglect or abuse? Wouldn't that physician be obligated to talk to the parents, and do his/her best to protect that child from further mistreatment? You certainly wouldn't want to see a physician treating a child's multiple and very suspicious injuries just because he was making a profit on the child's ER visits.

byb in our area

Hi, I am new here, but I have seen the byb as well and the bad affects they have on the breeds of different dogs. The people that we bought our first boxer from are definitely in this category. They don't health test their dogs, they don't guarantee their animals. Not only that, they won't even worm them before selling their puppies! We have had our puppy for 3 weeks and have spent almost 2 weeks trying to get her healthy. When we took her to the vet he put her on 4 different medications! You could see all her ribs and her hip bones protruding under her skin. My husband and I are glad we got her out of a bad situation, but I hope she doesn't have severe health problems in the future due to poor breeding. I wish people would research breeding before they did it so the animals that are produced have the very best chance.
In the future, we know we will only buy our animals from reputable, responsible breeders. Then we are doing our part to be responsible too.
