Boxer Pal
Hello Guys,

My name is Robert, and my girlfriend and i have a female boxer (Montana) and we are about to purchase a male boxer. The only thing is that he was the runt of the litter. Can any only help determining if i should buy him? Is there any pros and cons about the runt?? Please let me know what u think..

Ivy was the runt of her litter. She is the only pure bred boxer that I have/had so I can't compare any difference other than her looks. She is 2 years old and weighs 38lbs... she is really tiny. Most people who meet her think she is 5 or 6 months old. LOL!

I dont think that runt will always be small though. I have a friend who has a lab that was the runt of the litter and now she is the biggest of all her sisters as adults.

Pros: People love to talk about her since she is so small... not is a bad way - in an adoring 'aw how cute' way

Cons: none - she is still all boxer as far as her personality is concerned.

Fraze was 1/3 the size of his littermates at 12 wks when I brought him home. At 7 years he is a beautiful 75 lbs and the BEST DOG I have ever had the pleasure to live with :)

My girl was the runt and at 16 months, she still is! LOL She's only 49 lbs. But she's doing her best to "beef up". We all have dreams don't we?......

My Nano (hence the name) was the runt. At 8 weeks (when we brought her home) she was 6lbs. Her littermates were all 10-13+lbs at that age. She is still on the smaller side for a female but not dramatically so. She is very fit and weighs about 55lbs at 3yrs old. Out of my three boxers she has been the healthiest and has the best temperament. I would only be concerned about purchasing the runt if he seemed to have health issues.

I once had a lab that was the runt of the litter. By the time he was a year old you would never have known he had been a runt. Some grow to be the biggest of the litter, some stay petite.

My Hurricane was the runt, and he has stayed much smaller than the average boxer. Its always kind of a toss up whether they will stay small or grow to a more normal size, I think. He has had several health issues but I think they have more to do with the fact that he is poorly bred rather than the fact that he was the runt... we bought from a BYB without knowing how terrible an idea that was! Anyway, full grown Hurricane weighs 48 lbs. I can get more weight on him, but then his ribs disappear. At a good healthy weight for his size, he stays at 48 lbs even. :) My little baby!

I think the main issue would be if the pup is healthy. Lots of pups/kittens are in the "runt of the litter" range and do just great as many of our boxer lovers have stated. Good luck.
