I have just joined this site in the hope that I will make a lot of buddies who can advise me on the rearing of our baby Blitz. Blitz is 7 weeks old today and we fetched him at the Airport on Monday after he has been flying around for some hours before he eventually got to us. He is very lively and oh so fiesty! :) But what concernes me most is that he poos a great deal and it is runny as well. He is hardly eating anything which bothers me too and I am scared he is going to starve. The breeder told us to feed him raw chicken wings and the dry puppy "pellets", but he battles with the chicken wings. We were also told to not under any circumstances give him any commercialized can/tin dog food.....so PLEASE help me here and tell me what other foods I can give our baby Blitz which will help with the runny poos and fill his tummy up as well.

Thank you very much!

Rosalind -

Welcome to BW. I'm not a BARF-er and it sounds like you are. Good luck!! I've been reading into BARF-ing my little boy.

As for the runny poo's try canned pumpkin, not the pie filling, just pure pumpkin. Also, a mixture of rice and plain yogurt may help as well. When Kaiser was Blitz's age, he had runny poo-s too, and our vet recommended that. He LOVED it, and his stools firmed up.

I'm sure there is more advice that our BARF-ers can give you. Keep your chin up and give Blitz a hug from Kaiser and I.

Can you clarify one point please? You say you have been told not to use commercial food, and it sounds like you are being told to only use BaRF (Bones and Raw Food). To me it does not sound like you made that choice. Who is telling you this? If it is the breeder, is it in the contract you signed to buy the puppy? If not, what is stopping you from doing commercial food if you wish? Now if you prefer BaRF'ing then I understand, you should go read up in the BaRF forum we have. Tons of recipes in there. Oh well, just curious who is "telling you". Good luck with the new puppy and enjoy the heck out of it, from what I keep reading, they grow to darn fast :)

don't worry

If you just picked him up on Mon. and he was flying around on a plane for a while, -- he may just be a little anxious. New environment new people -- his system is just getting used to it.

We just got our 3 boxer pups in Feb. and they all had the runs at first -- and on occasion they would get it at different times. It would be solid in the morning , runny in the afternoon and solid by the evening.

I wouldn't worry -- give it time.

As far as food - our breeder fed the dogs pedigree - which I am not crazy about. We now feed our dogs 1/2 pedigree puppy and 1/2 Eukanuba. I am interested in the BARF diet also, but do not know much about it.

Good morning Vasha and Gracie, Thank you very much for your input, it is very much appreciated. :) I gave him a bit of rice and what do you know.....his stools are firmer and he slept the whole night through as well, first time! *big smile*

Hello Eric,

To answer your question, yes, the breeder told us to give him raw chicken wings and as he gets bigger, bigger raw bones. No, that is not my choice either but she told us to make sure that 60% or more of his diet consists of raw meaty bones. As we have never had a purebred boxer before, naturally we relied on her to give us as much info as she could relating to a diet for Blitz, what to give, what not to give etc. We have another dog, a 2 yr old shitzu who refuses to eat commercial dog food in tins, but he is quite happy to actually eat everything we eat, left over food etc. I guess I am afraid to try him on anything which will make him sick, but after reading many other posts in the forums here, I see that diets of boxers vary greatly. :)

I think you need to feed Blitz whatever works for him and you. Although lots of people feed there dogs the BARF diet and it works perfectly well there are plenty of us who prefer a commercial food. I have never tried the BARF diet and I do here wonderfull things about it but my babies have always been on Iams hard food and they are in perfect health. I plainly don't have the time for the BARF diet. The one thing I might stay away from is soft food (canned). Soft food causes alot of tarter build up, not only bad for the teeth but causes some smelly breath.

There are alot of healthy boxers represented on this site who BaRF and those who use bag food from a store. It is up to you the owner, and of course the dog (some get sick, or wont eat certain foods). The percentage your breeder told you is not a law for all boxers, it is up to you to research and find your own path. Good luck and post some pictures when you can, we are all fanatics over new pictures to oooh and ahhh over!
