Do any of you take your dogs for runs with you? If so, how old do you think a dog should be before you start to condition it to run with you?

I take Nina for our morning runs....she is only 18 weeks.
I keep our runs short...30 min...and just take it nice and slow for now....she just loves to do anything i do....walking...running ...watching tv...she is there right beside me...the best companion...best partner to take jogging!!

The youngest your boxer should be before you can begin to condition it through running along side you is 18 months. Even then do not over do it. Whatever your normal run is work your dog up to that distance. For example, if you run 5 miles a day, start out by running 1/2 mile the first 2 weeks then add in a 1/2 mile or so every other week until you reach 5 miles. If you follow that schedule you'll be up to 5 miles in about 4-5 months. Remeber that if your dog is getting more exercise you'll need to adjust his food and water intake as well.

Although the usual standard for forced exercise is 18 months. I personally recomend waiting until their at least 2 years old. Just my 2 cents.

Tasillo,

I urge you to not run with your baby until at least 18 months. 18 weeks is way to young. You could be doing damage to her skelatal and muscular structure. Her entire body is still developing and you could cause permanant damage including but not limited too, HD (Hip Dysplasia), Elbow Dysplasia, ligament damage as well as number of other issues that could be very costly to you and your baby!

My Titan is almost two and we go on short "jogs", not necessarily a run b/c we are slow and enjoy ourselves. We like to look at scenery and he stops now and then if he finds something good to look at. I wouldn't push your dog into a long jog, run, or walk. We go for maybe 20 minutes, just to get him out some in public. Sometimes it's a walk, and sometimes it's jogging- we try to split it up some. I dont know if boxers are really into running for long periods of time- I"m sure other ppl on here know more about this stuff than I do- but I personally would not risk Titan's health and well-being for a run. BTW be sure you pup is up to date on all vaccines before you go too far out in public on your runs just so he doesn't catch anything along the way.

Will Do

Since you say Nina is too young i will not take her for my runs....maybe i made it sound far worse than it is....its more of a fast walk with a max 10 min run through the park.....but i will take the advice and stop it ...just keep it to walks till she is older

Thanks for all of your input. I dont even have a dog yet or jog/walk outside regularly. LOL!! I was just curious, but these things are good to know before hand.

My vet advised us not to do any strenuous exercise with any dog (we have labs too) until they are at least 6 months. We would take Gus for long (1 to 2 miles) walks before 6 mths, but waited to take him backpacking and jogging until he was 6 mths. Anyways, just my 2 cents...

I agree -- 18 months minimum.

Six months is even far too young. Their bones and joints are still trying to develop and you could do some serious damage. I learned this the hard way with one of my previous dogs (growing up)!

Good luck!

Yep, 18 months is about the minimum for running/jogging. And be careful with long walks too. Really, your pup should be getting the vast majority of it's exercise from playing.

As JVZ boxers has pointed out, you risk doing permanent damage to joints and ligaments that aren't fully developed before that age. Hip dysplasia, for one, is thought to have an environmental component (it's not just a genetic thing) and can really ruin your dog's life.

As a general rule, anything that can be considered as 'forced exercise' should be avoided with a puppy until such time as it's growth plates have completely closed. That just happens to be at around 18 months, hence that age as the recommended minimum ;)

'Forced exercise', incidentally, is any form of exercise where the dog isn't going to take short frequent rests and pauses. It will rest for brief periods when playing, it won't when it is trying to keep up with you on a leash walking or running. And that sort of constant pressure is what does the damage. You can do a search here on 'forced exercise' if you want more information - there's plenty of it ;)
