Running with your boxer

Anyone else run with your boxer? Max is about a year old and I take him running when the weather is cooler - he is so happy to go that he sprints for the first 15 minutes, then dies. I bring water with us, so he drinks a lot, but I'm wondering if this is something that will change once he gets used to running. The farthest I have taken him is 6 miles, and I doubt he will make it any farther right now. Our norm is usually 3-4 and I finish my runs on my own, or pick him up when I have 3-4 miles left. He goes crazy when I get my running shoes out and can't wait to get the leash on and get out the door. Any suggestions on how I can get him to better pace himself???

I used to jog with Apollo and I have to say that since we started out together, we did pretty well. I have never gone farther than a mile and have to admit that I didn't jog the whole time. It sounds to me like you are a seasoned runner and know better than to take off like crazy and pace yourself. Your Boxer on the other hand doesn't realize that you're going to go that long, so he burns out pretty easily. I think that if you go for 'more' short runs, he might realize that he should start out slowly. Maybe you could take him out to just play before you begin also!! That way he might burn some of his exsuberance (sp?) a little earlier and pace himself a little better!

I have to give you kudos for picking him up for the last 3-4 miles!! There is no way I could jog while carrying Apollo for any distance!! LOL I think yours just needs to 'work' himself up to a long distance runner!! Give it time and I bet he'll make it through the whole jog!!!

I don't literally pick him up, I meant I stop back at the house and get him for my final 3-4 miles of my run:) Hee hee!

It's recommended not to jog or run with your boxer until they are 18 months of age or older because their joints aren't completely formed yet and any kind of strenuous exercise can exacerbate joint issues as they age.

 I too was wondering how in the heck anyone could jog and carry a 12 month old Boxer!!

Like Vasha pointed out...it's not recommended to run with your dog until 18+ months of age. It's best to wait until they're bones are mature to prevent joint injury.

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one that read it that way!! Thanks Alisha!!!

It would be a pretty funny sight though!!!

I found a track near my house with a fence around it. If nobody is there, I let Rowdy run off leash while I am running. Otherwise, he pulls like a freight train for the first couple of laps before he settles down.

Does that mean you can't pick them up and run with them either like amt15811? lol.
I can see it now, mothers will have something new to complain to their kids about. "Don't run around the house with the Boxer."

yeah, i run with chester all the time. we have woodsy trail where i feel totally comftorble letting him run off leash. he frollics in the trees and chases squirles. it makes my day. other than that he's pretty good running on leash as well. he goes nuts for the first 100 yards and then calms down. It took him a month or so to learn to run at my pace but now he's golden. I started running regularly with him just after he turned a year and I have had no problems since. For both of your sakes, try to run on trails or tracks as much as possible.
