Yesturday, i put Roxy in her crate at 2pm before I left for work as usual. My son came home from school at 3:15 and found Roxy sleeping on the couch. My son said the top lock on the crate was open and the bottom remained locked. I can't figure out how she managed to squeeze her body out of the crate. It also scares me because she could have strangled herself. Her kong was still in the crate(emptied), also a few toys, I guess she got bored in the crate. I am happy she didn't tear anything up. Now I am a little nervous about putting her in it. Any suggestions?

When Harley was younger he would push his head up against the top of his metal crate and let the front fall in. Then he'd simply walk out. I had to buy the plastic crate with the door to keep him inside.

Lucy did the same thing with the top lock undone and bottom one locked. I too worried about her and wondered how she did it. we had to use the clasp used on the end of leashes and clipped just the clasp on the door and the crate to keep her in. (does that make sense)

We are going through the same thing with Miss Payton! But hers is the bottom lock undone and the top locked. We just put Roxy in the smaller cage and Payton in the bigger one that she cant break out of. Good luck....let me know if you find a fix.

Use zip ties! If you put the ties around the top part of the cage, and through the door, they won't be able to break out. You can put them all around the top and sides of the cage so they can't find a weak spot. You'll need a big bag of them, because the ones you attach to the door will have to be cut off each time, but those suckers are nearly impossible to get through otherwise.

Great ideas

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have an old leash so I'll take it apart and use the clasp to lock the door shut. I also happen to have a large bag of those zip ties. So that is also an option. At 4 1/2 months Roxy is a little to young to be trusted alone. I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks!!

Just a suggestion as a friend of mine just went through this same thing last week with his dog. I would NOT suggest the zip ties......his dog managed to chew through them and still got out......and probably ate a few of the ties in the process. He bought small little pad locks and put them on the areas that the dog was opening. Since then the dog has not gotten out. I would personally suggest avoiding the zip ties as it could be dangerous if the dog eats them.

Little Hurcules, or as we like to call him, Houdini, has done the same thing, many times. He has also chewed through the zip ties. Try the heavy duty ones, so far, so good by us. Good luck!!! I know how you feel!!!
