Hi all. This is my first post. I have read a lot here and learned a lot about owning a boxer. We have a one and a half year old brindle. Last night we found her laying in the ivy eating ice that my husband had dumped earlier from a cooler. She was lethargic and acting strangely. She layed on her pillow panting for some time and then slept. We noticed her jowels were swollen especially on one side. This morning she is acting herself again, but her mouth and underneath her jaw area is swollen. She ate and drank with no problem. Do you think this is related to the ice or possibly an insect bite from the ivy? We did call the vet last night, and he assured us she would be fine. Just wondering if anyone has had an experience like this.

Well, I guess if she ate a LOT of ice it could be hypothermia. More likely it is the result of an insect bite (ice won't produce swelling).

Best just to keep a good eye on her, and don't hesitate to take her along to a vet if anything takes a turn for the worse. Eating and drinking normally is a good sign though :)

Thanks for the heads up on the introduction forum, Debbie. I jumped the gun and went right for the health issues, mostly because of my concern about Roxy. I did take her to the vet and he agrees with the bug bite theory. She developed a large goiter under her jaw and close to her throat. He was glad to see her as he said the swelling may have spread to the throat if not treated. She is doing great today and the swelling has gone down a lot.

Wel regardless, I hope ice doesn't cause them problems because every time we get ice out of the fridge, Jackson comes running. He sure loves ice! Glad to hear your baby is feeling better
