Rolling in poo !

Hi All
This isn't for my boy, Conker, but the boxer of a colleague. He brings his boxer to work as we work in a shipyard and he has free run of the yard. The problem is several times a week, this boxer rolls in poo. Does anyone have any idea WHY ? Is it to cover up another smell he doesn't like on himself ? We've racked our brains but can't come up with the reason.
When it happens the boxer knows he's done wrong but still goes back and does it again.
Any thoughts welcome !

Heidi has done this too. If I start to see her sniffing something and is really engrossed in it, I know for sure she is about to do the drop and roll on it. I usually just call her to me to get her attention off it before she gets all stinky. That works but not all the time..she is a quick one with that trick. No answers as to why though..I always figured it had the scent of another animal that attracted her.

Magoo does this too, it's never in fresh poo though Thankfully!
We go to a large field near our house and let him run around off leash and play fetch and there are alot of wild critters living there including deer and he always finds the need to roll around in the dried up old poo he finds. It's like he's in ecstacy. I'd like to know the reason as well, it sure is odd!

It's a perfectly normal dog behaviour - going way back to the days when dogs did not have humans to do the hunting for them What is the best way to catch a Rabbit? Blend right in so the Rabbit can't even smell you Some dogs also just enjoy rolling in smelly stuff and there is probably no big reason at all for this type of thing, just the 'fun' factor.

Some dogs have retained this hard-wiring more than other. Out of our four Boxers it's only Layla how does this and she will actively seek out smelly stuff to roll in - the others could not imagine anything worse.
