This past Friday my husband and I returned home from work to find Rocky in a pretty bad situation. My big boy decided he wanted out of his crate and he almost succeeded... except for his hind left leg. We found him with his entire body out of the crate except his foot was caught in the door!! Apparently my husband says he doesn’t quiet remember if he closed both latches on his crate.. dohicon Needless to say I FREAKEDDDDD OUTTTT fainticon, his leg looked horrible, we could see the meat in his foot and it was crooked. The crazy part is he wasn’t crying or bleeding. (My poor baby) I immediately thought its broken! its broken! *tear. We hurried him to the ER and they x-rayed him and we received good and bad news. The good news- its wasn’t broken, only a tiny fracture with will heal on its own with time. The bad news- his bones look a little shifted and this could affect his growth plates in his leg. UGHHHH!! So they bandaged him up send us home with his x-rays and an appointment to see the specialist on Saturday. The specialist ended up doing a stress test on his foot to see if his bones were damaged in the chaos of him trying to get free. Again, we were sent home with pain meds and the cute bandage you see in the pics and no answer of what the results were. noideaicon Well, FINALLY yesterday we got the call from the vet and thank GOD he doesn’t need surgery! appicon I felt bad enough that I wasn’t there to help him but now we have to keep him off of his feet for 2 weeks until his check up. I’m fine with the little difficulty that we are facing trying to keep him happy and off of his foot, Id rather have that than have his foot be permanently damaged. I cannot explain how horrible it felt to see my baby hurt and so soon, I mean we only had him for 2 weeks! We learned our lesson and we are keeping him in a smaller crate for now and as he grows he will upgrade him to his big one. I pray that he has a quick recovery and we get him back on track, he’s itching to run and playyyy. I don’t know what I’m going to do about leaving him in his crate.. nonoicon

Love this face! lovicon

Sounds like separation anxiety. I had to do all types of things. Long story short after different meds we had to put him on reconcile. Adult form Prozac that I get filled at walgreens for 20.00 a three month supply. My boy had separation anxiety really bad so this was the last step. I tried homopathic and snacks as well as the plug. Keep us posted. My dog used to do the same thing. I even had to Bobie trap the crate. Now he is left loose. Go on line and go to the reconcile website to see more info and talk to your vet. Maybe you won't have to go to that extreme.

Oh noes, that's so sad. I cant help but to say how cute that cast is, with the little handicap dog sign on it.

Is it a wire crate? With my pitbull I had to use a carabiner with each crate latch. He could slide the latches over eventually, so I would use a carabiner to attach it to the crate once 'locked'.

Similar to the following photo I found on google image search

Maybe he worked it loose and then attempted to escape. If not, and you think one was left undone, for future use, always make sure they are both latched! I would still consider using a carabiner or something similar just in case.

Aww poor little guy..seems they will do anything to try and get out of those crates. Koda absolutely hates his!

We keep him in the restroom now and just put something in front of the door so that he can't get out. I have to post the video though where he climbed up his kennel to get out of the restroom though(scary).

I HOPE YOUR LITTLE GUY GETS BETTER SOON!! :)

I totally agree, he hates when we leave his sight, he automatically begins to whine and cry. I knew it was going to be hard for him when we leave for work but I never thought this would happen. Thank you for the website I will look into it but hopefully he will get used to us being away.

Yes it is a wire crate and we were using the divider in it but he still has so much room to stand or jump up. For now we have him in a much smaller plastic crate and it has the type of latches that go into the hole. If that makes any sense. Heres a pic:

Since he has to be more confined because his leg it feels alot more "safe", at least to me it does. I appreciate the idea of using a carabiner, it looks like it might be the best method to keep him in. I have a feeling my husband did forget but he felt bad enough that I just couldnt give him any grief about it. I def know we both learned our lesson from this..

You probably did close both latches. If you cratei s like mine, and if your boxer is like mine, then yes, you did close both latches. What Boa would do to begin escaping the crate, is press his head against the door, and rock back and forth (Freaking clever resourceful dog, LOL). I caught him doing this. After time, the bottom latch of the crate would always come loose. When he was smaller, like yours, he could squeeze out of that space. The top latch never came undone, but the bottom one, still to this day, is always unlatched when I come home. What I did to rectify that, is to use 2 bunji cords across the door. One in the middle, and one down low. So even if the bottom latch comes undoen, he can't push to door open enough. He is now to big to squeeze out of that opening, but I still use the bunji cords, cause when he did escape, BOY he tore my house up. :) ALthough he was much younger then.

Good Luck. And your boxer is absolutely ADORABLE. :)

They are just too smart for their own good!! Im afraid to see what else he can get into later on but we do our best to keep an eye on him. Besides with the sweet face he has the little rascal thinks he can get away with anything! Honestly I would have much rather him tear up whatever is in his room than him injure himself the way he did.

And thank you!! Everyday that Im at work I cant wait to get home to him, hes just too cute. lovicon
