Recently, I ran across a website dedicated to saving dogs in shelters by organizing "shippments" of select dogs in local kill shelters, on "death row", to rescue groups with room or available foster homes, generally in the northeast. They have been making a huge impact here in the Atlanta area for some local animal shelters. One thing that has come up on this site is that there are several purebred boxers, needing rescued, and the two local "boxer specific" rescues are completely full. I got an email from one boxer rescue today that knows of 7 boxers needing rescued in the next state....that doesn't include metro atlanta. They simply do not have the room or resources to take anymore. Would it be possible to follow the lead of the other website and send the boxers without foster homes to out of state boxer rescues? Do any exist that have excess room and foster homes available? Just wondering if this would actually be something that could be done or is it just wishfull thinking.

I am sure it would be possible but to find a rescue that has room would be the hard part. I recently emailed I think 4 rescues to let them know of a boxer in a highkill shelter, 3 emailed back and said they knew about him but were completely full, the other said they would see what they could do. The next day I called the shelter and he was picked up by a rescue that was just starting. I don't know how true that is because the shelter didn't seem to care about who the dogs went to, they didn't even require the dog to be spayed or neutered!

Just last week, I went to a shelter and brought home a full blooded boxer, he is like the perfect dog! Why he was there, we don't know but he is here now and doing great. I may not be able to save them all but at least we made a difference for one.

Unfortunately, there isn't much room.

It's really great that you want to help out Boxers that have found their way into the shelter system! Being a rescue member, I can tell you the best way you can help is by volunteering. The most crucial area of need with most rescue organizations tends to be lack of foster homes. The more homes they have to place those dogs temporarily until they can be vetted, neutered, and adopted, the more animals they can pull from high-kill shelters before they are pts. However, fostering is just not possible for everyone, and that's where the option of general volunteer comes in. Volunteers are needed to transport, do home checks for potential foster homes and adopters, check vet and personal references, or even to keep in contact with your local shelter so if an animal comes in you can go and assess, and then "pull" if approved. While it is a fantastic thing to try and notify rescues of an animal in need, or to even go and get the animal yourself, if the rescue doesn't have any homes available to place the dog, our hands are completely tied. We have contact with nearly all rescues in our area, and representatives that check shelters daily to try to pull as many as possible before they are put to sleep, so we know how many are there that we just can't help. It's so frustrating... When I think of all of those animals who were pts over Labor day weekend, I get so sick, but the sad reality of it is, the rescues are usually completely run by volunteers and donations, and the funds, and homes are simply not enough...
