Bailey's

Boxer Buddy
My friend and I went into one of the local pet stores (I don't know why I do this to myself), about a week ago and there was a 10 week old male coming out for the nebulizer(sp?) with the owner. My heart broke and I thought about this little angel all week. I endind up in that part of town yesterday and went in to see if he was still there, of course he was!! I ended up buying him and taking him home. Luckily, my vet is the best and saw me right away. Turns out this little guy has a grade 1 heart murmor, upper respitory infection and is severly underweight !The owner had sent some antibiotics home with me and the vet said they were completely wrong for his infection. THey didn't say anything about his heart condition and again, thanks to my vet they will be paying for his next couple of visits !! He is on meds now and is getting along great with my other boy who is 1 and 68lbs. He is sooooo happy and eating like a horse. I hope his little heart continues to pour out love!! THe vet says that he should be ok, its just something we have to monitor. Does anyone else have this problem in their furbaby?? I'd love to get some info. I am absolutley in love with this little guy!! Just thought I'd share!!

I don't have any info on your pups HM, but I want to thank you for having a good heart & giving this pup a home. I know we should not support the pet stores, but I feel so sorry for these pups, but I wish you lots of luck with your new baby. Hanley

I just brought home an 8.5 month old female who has a grade 2 heart murmur. I got her from the same breeder I got my white boy Otis from. She was supposed to go to a show home where they were going to show and finish her and then breed her, but she turned out to have the heart murmur so they didn't take her since you shouldn't breed her with a heart murmur. Anyway, I ended up with her and she is the sweetest girl. The vet says the heart murmur shouldn't affect her life in any way and most people seem to say that they either get better or may completely disappear. They do not usually get worse. Grade 1 is very low, lowest on the scale of 6. So, I would continue to monitor it and have it checked whenever you are the vet, but he should be just fine!

Good luck with him!

bailey turned one last week and he has a grade 4 murmur. hes on beta blockers and apart from one isolated incident (which led to the official diagnosis) hes showed no symptoms at all. he sort of fainted inthe park one day and we were refered to a heart specialist who scanned him etc and gave him the beta blockers. he was at the vet last week for something else and our regular vet said that in his opinion his murmur had lessened. hes due for a follow up scan in feb so we'll see what the specialist says. he did say last time that many boxer pups are born with some degree of murmur and usually he would have expected it to have gone by 6 months if it was going to, bailey was 6 months when we found out. frim my understanding of it, its caused by a narrowing in the aorta which means that where the blood should be flowing through smoothly, it ends up going through like a hosepipe when you put you finger over the end so it kind of sprays out faster. a normal boxers blood should be going through there around 1 meter per second, but with a grade 4 its 4 m/sec.
hes just a normal hyper fun loving boxer, and the only adaptions we have made apart from the meds, are a few breaks when exercising hard, and attention to his weight (to limit the worj his heart has to do!)
hes fully registered with champions all through his lines, and both his parents have been fully heart screened and passed. I always thought it was purely heridetry (sp?) but i guess its not always the case.
congrats on your new boy. i know theres people who will say you were encouraging the byb style pet store culture but if it was me, I wouldnt have been able to leave him there either!
any questions feel free to pm me
