Rescue questions..

I recently adopted from a rescue. She is about 2yrs old, and I brought her in to live with my roomates 4yr old male. Things are going beautifully! They didn't know anything about her really but she was being fostered in a home with another Boxer. She was scared of everything, and very shy, but over the past 3 months that she has been with us, she is beginning to relax. We determined that she was not not abused, but probably just neglected and had not been socialized nor exposed to a lot of normal everyday stuff or people. She seemed to be more comfortable with my roomate's dog at first which leads me to believe that she spent more time with other dogs than with people. She has learned to trust us therefore learning how to just be a happy, spoiled boxer! I was so nervous and things could not have turned out more the opposite of what I feared! I hope things work out the same for you!

Ok, guess I will put my 2 cents in, if you dont mind.

...2. Scared dogs will not show their true personalities for many weeks, so if you are willing to try, please know that to be fair to the dog, you should make the committment to keep him at the very least 2-3 months. Usually that is how long it takes to get a dog adopted.
...6. There are places you can go for information and books that will help. I strongly recommend the following two, get them as soon as possible they will help alot with the initial transition
How to be the Leader of the Pack by Dr. Patricia McConnell
Cautious Canine by Dr. Patricia McConnell
both books will help you with his integration into the home.

I certainly don't have as much experience as ladyluck_t, but as the proud mom of 2 rescues, I have to agree with these suggestions. Mali is a little dickens, WAY naughtier than Oscar ever was, and the shelter staff did not tell me, probably because Mali simply didn't act like that while there, she was too scared and confused. I would also suggest you look at Feeling Outnumbered by Karen London and Patricia McConnell. It has good suggestions for managing your multi-dog household.

Yes his name is Picasso! How did you know?? Any thoughts?

I made a guess based on the rescue being approved and you saying the other male dog wasn't getting along with him. I am a volunteer with AABR. I don't have any inside info though, I only know what was on his Petfinder page, I am sure you know more about him then I do. I am not sure which kennel he is in, but all the people who work with our dogs in the kennels are extremely knowlegable about dogs in general and especially Boxers, so if they said he would settle down in a calm home and it is just the kennel stressing him out, I would believe it. We really liked Bogey. We were going to go up today but the event was taking place up in NYC, and no one could meet us at the kennel. I was dissapointed. I hope that he does not get taken by someone else. It is a bit of a long drive for us to go see him. So it will probably be next weekend. I will kep you posted with what happens.
