I can see both sides of this issue and I think it truly comes down to your purpose in breeding. My purpose in breeding is not to get as many dogs in the show ring as I can. My overall purpose is to develop a healthy, structurally and temperamentally correct, long-lived line of Boxers. My goals for each litter vary - for my next litter, the goal is to produce a quality bitch to carry on my breeding program, as we'll be retiring our foundation bitch after this litter. My overall goal figures in to who I choose to breed to, etc. I always breed a litter with the intent to keep a puppy for myself - usually for show purposes (and even this new bitch I plan on showing as well). If I had two (or more) puppies that I was having a hard time deciding on for myself, I would hold on to them until the decision was easier to make, or place one in a home where I knew it would be shown/bred if I wanted. If I had my pick puppy, and there was another "to die for" puppy from the litter, I would hold on to it for a serious show home. But not every puppy in a litter is show quality - you're generally lucky if you get 1 or 2 - and I see no point in putting out a dog that is not the best of the litter. I'd far rather see that pup in a wonderful pet home where it is loved, and where it could possibly excel in obedience, agility, therapy work, etc. (And, even if I placed a top-quality puppy in a pet home, rest assured it would not become a "yard-mutt"- I screen my buyers thoroughly!)

I guess it is terrible to have a yard mutt (??? - my pet girl lives in the house with me...) with a CDX, UDX, TDX, AX, AXJ, MX, and/or a TDI title after their name?
Pet quality dogs can do great things for a breeding program too.

Actually, meeting someone kids has always given me insight into the parents. When adults want that nice puppy, they are saavy enough to know how to play the game. They will try to say the right things and conduct themselves above reproach. It is kind of like a job interview
But the kids will be who they are. If I see kids that are respectful, happy and definitely on the same track with their parents, then my heart sings.
I honestly have nothing against that Boxer that is just a pet. Loving pet homes are so important and they always will be. My Boxers may be show dogs, but they are also couch potatos that demand their dinner on time and frequent walks into the neighborhood. They are in the ring for a few minutes but in my home forever.
The original thread was about naming a puppy. I personally pick the registered name of all my puppies including the pet ones. I take great pride in naming them. I consider it a perk of being a breeder. The call names are completely up to their new owners. But the registered name is something that will be immortalized in a pedigree and I believe it should be a reflection of the breeder.

I don't maintain a huge kennel were my dogs live in runs 24/7.
All my boxers live inside my home with me. We have shifts of dogs due to the fact so & so is in heat, So & so doesn't like so & so ect. When I plan to bred a litter I plan on keeping everyone if the right home doesn't come along.
But lets be serious, those what if pups are just that, what if's & should be placed as such. A correct boxer is just that correct & nice from the get go, of course things such as bites ect. will change a bit while growing, but they always come back to good.
Top lines never shorten from my experience, nor do bad fronts correct them selves, & weak heads stay just that weak. The hardest decisions I've ever had to make was to acess my litter as not the breeder. And place the pups accordingly, on a spay neuter contract, with limited registration. If it's not good enough for me to keep, I don't want it bred down the road. My white's stay on the premises till they can be spayed or neutered, then placed.
In america less than 200 boxers a year win there title of Champion, but yet it's one of the most heavily shown breeds we have in this country. Always in the top ten for popularity also if you look at #'s of litters registered. It's up to the breeders to only show case those boxers of excelent quality so the judges have good examples to select from in the bred ring. Not dogs of average quality or less, simply due to the fact it's a breeders lifetime of work on paper & in the whelping box. I respect your feelings & I'm comfortable in how I feel about what I'm doing. The last thing i want is to be Kennel blind as to the merits or lack of in the whelping box.
Socialization begins long before you cash in on the sale of that pet quality boxer. Much has been written on the subject, & I'm proud to say that I raise well socialized, happy puppies that go to wonderfull homes that I'm in contact with on a on going basis. I to have passed on the highest offer many a time for the better home. We mesh the temperment of the pup to the home. If the prospective buyer doesn't like the pup I feel is the right one they will have to look elsewere. No matter what they offer for the one they want. As I stated show quality boxers represent a very small precentage of each litter, I'll hold on to mine till the cows come home if need be. Since i'm not over run with dogs I can afford to do that. I Have the time, the desire, and the love of the bred to do so. Bottom line is each of us are free to develop our blood-lines, & do with them as we each see fit. I'm not passing judgement on any thing anyone else does. I merely stated what I would do. Temperment & health go hand in hand for both pet & show quality dogs. Conformation & markings are the icing on the cake.
