We have some friends who have 3 frozen turkeys that they let thaw but now are not going to use. They said they're not safe for human consumption and know that we feed our boys raw, so we picked them up, but we are worried about the safety of feeding thawed turkey when we don't know exactly how long it was thawed out for. Also, can we re-freeze thawed turkey and it is still safe for our dogs to eat?

hi, personally i wouldnt risk it if you dont know how long its been out for, plus you cant refreeze thawed meat unfortunately

I'd feed it without thinking twice about it being thawed or re-frozen, honestly. Dogs aren't affected by those things like humans are; their digestive systems are designed to handle even rotting meat. I've fed my boxers raw chicken that had been sitting in the fridge for a while... smelled pretty bad (to me that is -- they however went bonkers over it). Other than being especially gassy that night, they had no issues :D

Thank you everyone! We chopped one up and there was still some ice chunks in parts of it, so we felt better that it they had not come to room temperature so they should be fine. The other 2 we put back in the freezer. Three huge turkeys is a lot of food for our boys and will feed them for a month or more, so I am so happy to know it's safe to feed them and we don't have to throw away a month of free meals! Thanks again! :)

It will be fine. Refreezing meat is safe, it just reduces the quality. So it is never recommended. As long as the meat has been kept cold, I would definitely go ahead and feed it.

I have read that re-freezing meat will deminish the flavor and the texture of the meat. Humans will taste the difference but Dog's don't really care.

I have thawed and re-froze chicken, turkey and venison. Beef just stinks too much if you do, so I try not to re-freeze that.
