My boxers Rocky and Hank, both have red or bloodshot eyes. Is this normal? At first I thought it was normal because they both have it and also had it when I got them about a month and a half ago. Rocky is a week over 4 months old and Hank is a rescue, so I can only guess he is 1 yr to maybe 1 and 1/2 yr.But I have been reading so much on this site about allergies and wondered if it might be an environmental or maybe a food allergy. I feed them TOTW and they both seem to be doing really well with it.

Also I think Rocky has demodex mange. He has a couple of patches of bald spots about the size of a quarter. 2 on his back 1 on his hind leg and 1 on his side. Oh and around his eye. I am not treating him at this time, except for giving him Vitamin E and 2000mg of Fish Oil daily. He has had it for about 2 weeks but is not getting any worse. Also I am holding off on his last vaccination to give his immune system a break. Am I doing the right thing? I really dont want to use meds at this point. Thanks.

I know that Cash gets red eyes when he is tired. Weird, but true.

As far as demodex mange, Cash had a small spot when he was a few months old, but they didn't treat it. The vet said they would treat if it spread, but it went away fairly quick.

So does Fiona! It's the first time I've ever seen this in a dog :)

But I would guess that if they had bloodshot eyes all the time it could be an allergy. I get sore, bloodshot eyes in dusty environments for example

Are their eyes constantly red, or is it just sometimes - and is it both eyes? Also do they have normally pigmented haws (third eyelids) or are these unpigmented? The latter is common with flashy dogs especially, but can have an almost frighteningly red appearance during times such as teething for puppies, when the dog is excited or has been running around, or if the eyes are irritated.

My guys eyes are red only if he's super tired or if he pulls a lot on his leash or if he's playing. His lower eye lid had a white unpigmented spot for hte past like 4 weeks but now it is back to normal. he always has had eye goo so i thought nothing of it.

but red eyes all the time? The other boxer in our puppy class ALWAYS has bloodshot eyes. So I'm not sure.

Both eyes are red, but not 100% of the time. I will have to pay closer attention to see actually how much they stay red. I never really gave it much thought until now, so I really didnt pay much attention because I just thought it was a common trait. They do have a little goo out of the corner of their eyes occassionally, but not bad and not all the time.

if you think it is allergy related, the veterinary allergist we see recommended Visine-A for our boxer. His eyes get red and swollen often from just being outside and these drops seem to help some. Hopefully their eyes are just red and not bothering them.

Red eyes when tired

Roxy's eyes get red when she's very tired. Her eyelids seem to become really heavy and she usually drops pretty soon after I notice. After she wakes up from her nap/sleep her eyes are back to normal. I had never seen this in a dog before, so I'm glad to hear she's not the only one.

Roxy also whines when she's sleepy but wants to fight against falling asleep. They're so childlike...it's crazy.

Both our girls get red eyes when they're tired. Kona is brindle so has a very dark face, when she's tired she gets VERY naughty and all you can see are her red red eyes.... devil incarnate ;)

Dino had entropic eyes. His eyelashes were turned inward and rubbed on his eyes. This of course caused his eyes to be red. He had to have sugery to fix it. Might be something to have checked out.
