Ok, I live in Manhattan, and would love to bring Darwin to Central Park or Prospect Park in Brooklyn. But neither is walking distance (at least by the time we walked there he would have no energy to play anymore!). I have trouble enough getting a cab without a 70 pound dog, and none will stop if I have him. So, I've been taking him on the subway, which is a no-no. He loves it, and it puts him to sleep in two stops! Anyway, I've heard that the police will look the other way if the dog is in a container. So, I typically put him in a big duffle bag with his head sticking out the top. But, the duffle bag is no longer big enough, and it's becoming quite a hassle getting through the turnstiles and to the platform (because I have to carry him!).

So, is there any sort of collapsable container that someone knows of that will hold a full grown boxer? Wheels would be nice too! Any suggestions?

See, I looked at things like that, but the problem is that once I get where I'm going I now have this big thing with me. I'm looking for something sort of bag-like, or collapsable, that once he is out of it, I can carry around all day. I sort of envy small dog owners when it comes to things like this.

The other thing is that it doesn't have to be terribly comfortable (I sound pretty bad here!) because he'll be in it for no longer than 15 minutes.

How about finding some other doggy owners who also own cars and plan these trips with them. And the other times just walk him to the park... he wants to spend time with you more than being able to run around at the park anyway...

I think you'll have a hard time finding someone else with a car in Manhattan. Have you thought about calling a towncar? If you explain the situation to them and say the dog will be in a duffel bag, they might be willing to accomodate. Don't call the nice companies either, call the ratty ones first. They would probably be more willing to put a dog in the backseat. Good luck, Mariah.

Yeah, friends with cars are a precious thing on this island and I can't risk those relationships to transport the dog!

I think the best solution for me is to just go on the subway the way I have been, and risk the ticket. It's only a $25 fine, so I figure if I get caught one out of every five times then it's cheaper than a cab!

Find a good car service. There are many in Bklyn, if you want to go to Prospect Park for their off leash hours and weekends. There are also car services in Manhattan which will take you to Brooklyn or to Central Park, for about the same as a cab. Most don't mind dogs either. I used car service in Bklyn all the time with my girls. No problems.

How far from Central Park do you live?

Another solution: Move closer to the dog park! ;)

How about a moped pulling a trailer? They make fully enclosed trailers for 2 kids to be pulled behind bicycles. I'm not sure if you would have storage room for the equipment, but it's economical and even a little fun.

Pretty far from Central Park. All the way downtown. We have a few parks down here, but this is going to sound weird to some people, Darwin has never seen grass. There really just isn't a whole lot of grassed areas around here, and even fewer that allow dogs.

I looked into car service. I guess it will be all right for once in awhile, but it's not inexpensive. It's just sort of frustrating because he is so well behaved on the subway. There should be an exception to the rules for my dog (just kidding)!

Get sunglasses and a red tipped cane and take him with you on the Subway. Everyone will think he's a Guide Dog ! :D :D :D
