Purdy is a great 14 week old boxer. I have been training her since she was 8 weeks old. She can sit, lay, shake and run to her kennel on command, but I cannot get her to look at me when I say her name or come to me when I call for her. In addition, she will play fetch in the kitchen area, but when I throw a ball for her outside, she just lays down next to it and chews on it. Any training suggestions? Thanks!

My trainer suggested to get a dog ball crazy (he likes to use it as a motavitional tool in training instead of quite as many treats) he slathers it in something they love, like gravy and drop it in their food bowl. Let them play with it, lick it for awhile. It may take them a few times but eventually they love that ball.
He attaches like a parachute cord through the ball when he tosses it, when the dog grabs it, he calls the dog and then reels them in with the ball, usually they come in holding on to the ball without much resistance if they already know the come command. He asks them to drop it and gently pinches the jaw hinge joint so the mouth will open and drops in his hand, he immediatly praises them and then after a moment gives the ball back.
Once the dog is ball crazy hold it under your chin to get the dog to look at you. When the dog reponds to the command while looking at you they get the ball for a few moments. This is to get their attention and focus up at your face. You can use the ball as motivational tool in a lot of ways instead of food if you can get them ball crazy :)
Maybe someone has a good website with this idea?

Is she food orientated? If so have a treat ready to give her when you call her name and she looks at you or comes to you.

through trial and error we discovered that bailey isnt in the slightest bit food orientated. the other dogs at puppy class would do anything for a treat, bailey didnt care & would much rather be messing around than running to us for a piece of food. didnt take us long to discover that the prospect of a good play with us would bring him back straight away. i dont ever use his name when recalling him, instead i use 'come' or sometimes 'play' if hes being stubborn. i also have a secret weapon which is a small yellow latex ball that he LOVES but i dont let him have every day. only when i need to recall him. i produce the ball, give it a few squeaks and hes back like a shot!
it will just take you a while to work out what works for you both. make sure that you reward her in some way EVERY time she come back on your request. make a HUGE fuss and soon it wont be worth her while to ignore you!
good luck!

The easist way to get them to look at you when you say their name is to simply find the yummiest treat possible, pick a quiet spot to practise and simply say the dogs name while holding the treat near your face, as soon as your dog turns its head towards you--reward and praise. do it over and over until you gradually decrease the treat reward and just praise.

IF you want your dog to "come" when you call it, be sure you are using a command to come, not just calling their name. Saying their name is the attention-getter, it must be followed by a command to tell them what you want now that you have their attention!

To teach recall--always work with your dog on a lead. Start with a 6-foot lead and have your dog sit, go to the end of the lead and face your dog. Say their name and give your command for come (it could be "here", "come", etc...but choose one command word and stick with it! don't switch around!). Use a very happy cheery voice (not stern--you want them to think this will be a good thing!) and the very instant they move forward, begin praising like crazy until they reach you. then reward and big fuss! Once they are good with just the short 6 foot leash, start using a long lead (about 20ft is average). Start to gradually increase the distance from the original 6 ft to the full 20 ft. If you are having trouble once you let out the long lead, go back to shorter distances. Always use a happy voice, begin praising immediately when they start forward towards you, and big fuss/reward when they reach you. Always use their name + command.

You can also alter this method a bit--when you have them on the short lead, stand facing directly in front of them, and call them to you (name + command) and then run backwards facing them so that they "chase" you--praise while doing so for a few steps and then stop and reward/praise when they reach you.

You were asked back in March to post your Introduction, yet you still have not:

You need to do this now, or your account here will be deleted. This is required of all members, and should have actually been your very first post here (per the Rules, which you agreed to upon joining).

My pup does the same thing. She *knows* sit, down, shake, play dead and is bell trained. She does the commands most of the time. I will only tell her the command twice then i help her to that position. She is a stubborn gal sometimes. I have been trying to teach her the recall command. When I put a leash on her, its hard for her to stray off so I can call her and guide her back to me. She will start chewing on her leash and be content with that. With the techniques everyone has been recommending, how long does it take before they begin to recall? That is prob. the most important command i think, and i definitely need to have her do it EVERYTIME.
