I live in Arizona so winters are about 70 degree days so my dogs spend a lot of time outdoors laying by the pool (lol) there favorite place to lay. My male seems to have dry skin, not flaky but his coat seems dull and he is shedding like a banshee. Is there something I can put in his food, maybe bacon fat or some oil to help with his coat. My 2 females do not seem to have this, there coats are heavier now and not as great as in summer but his seems the worst.

I just changed form Purina to Canidae and am hoping this might help also.

Oh goodness do NOT use bacon fat you'll kill him with a heart attack (it's no better for your dog than for you). Usually fish oil and vitamin E does wonders (and yes the change in food should help also). Fish oil is typically 1,000mg per 20 pounds of body weight. My 67 pound boy takes 3 a day along with 400 IU capsule of vitamin E daily and both of my dogs have very soft coats (and I also live in Arizona, although with the threat of Valley Fever mine stay indoors most of the time). Human fish oil that you can get at Costco (most cost effective), Wal-Mart, Target, etc is just fine as well as with the vitamin E. I just put the capsules in their food whole and they eat them never had a problem. If yours won't do that you can poke a hole in the capsule and pour it over the food. And no it doesn't make them smell like fish.

I wouldn't recommend bacon fat, doesn't sound very healthy, but fish oil is marketed as a supplement for skin and coat. Darwin is taking Sea Pet brand fish oil with vitamin E for joint health - never has had a problem with his skin or coat.

I give my boys 1 egg each per week mixed in with their food and also Fish Oil and Vitamin E. They have a nice shiny coat. Soft and smooth too!

Oh the Fish Oil and Vitamin E is twice daily. I forgot the recommended dosages per pound of dog weight but I give mine 2000mg Fish Oil split between the two meals and 1 dose of 400mg vitamin E.

Both my boys get fish oil pills daily. It really seems to help their coats and skin.

Fish oil is typically 1,000mg per 20 pounds of body weight and vitamin E is one 400 IU capsule once a day.

its supposed to be an actual tem of -18f here with windchills around 40 below this weekend,so we are dealing with really low humidity indoors causing dry skin and itchiness, but the fish oil does help, also not sure if it was mentioned but pool chlorine is not good for dogs from what i understand, you may consider that as a culprit, but ive always found fish oil to help us,,,as far as the temps go,,,it was stated in the paper that Antarctica had a warmer day by 10 degrees today than us,,,wow, and this is only the midwest,,,so much for global warming
