Really disgusting problem. PLEASE help!

a liked to sneak down to the cat box for a little tootsie roll every now and then but yeah, its disgusting. We picked up one of the baby gates with a small pet door from a Target store in the area. Problem solved, no need to move the box, just go to Target or look online

Easy, quick and inexpensive fix found at your local hardware store.
You didn't mention where the box is located so I am *assuming* that it is an area that this set-up will work.
My cats litter box is in my master bathroom. The toilet, tub and shower are in the room. Smaller area.
I literally have a piece of peg board leaning up against the door frame (any similar piece of board will do). Looking at the door it is on the outside and at a slight angle with the bottom farther from the opening and the top part of the board is touching the door frame. Can cat easily walk behind the peg board and in between the door frame/door way to get into the bathroom/litter box.
It stands about 2.5 feet high (if that). I can easily step over it without any thought and do so multiple times during the night in the dark.
Limiting the access will be FAR better than trying to convince the dog that cat poo is BAD. In fact that is something that if given the chance most dogs would devour.
I wouldn't suggest a new box for an older cat. It might work but then again it might not and the might not would be enough to worry ME. I think a cat going outside of a new box they don't like would be worse than a dog eating cat poo. But that is just me.
If you have to move the box to accommodate a dog free zone do it slowly. Add in a 2nd box to the NEW location and let the cat know where it is. Praise the cat when it goes in the new box in new location. Eventually once it is being utilized.....remove the old box.
Still work on the leave-it command for other issues including tasty morsels found outside.

thanks everyone for the ideas. i went out and bought a baby gate and cut a small hole in it myself (much easier) so far so good we'll see when hes older. thanks for the idea cami, however my litter box is in the washroom (not very big at all) and there is no door to that room. another question i have is: how harmful can cat poop be for a 4 mnth old puppy?

As long as your cat doesn't go outside and isn't infected with any parasites, diseases, etc, I wouldn't worry about it. It's disgusting for us, but normal for animals. The only worry I'd have is if your cat had any intestinal parasites or diseases that could be passed through feces.

As disgusting as it sounds a lot of dogs do it. My daughter's sheppard/lab mix who's just about totally blind used to find her way to the litter box until she got a baby gate and no problem ever since. The gate is up high enough for the cat to get in but not high enough for Abby. Glad to hear things are looking up. Good luck.

The outgrowing is usually of their own feces. My dog was 8 years old and would still do it. I've had mostly adult dogs that would do it. They don't typically grow out of eating other animals (species that is) feces unfortunately.
I think the stuff to stop it is only to stop them from eating other dog's and their own feces not that of other animals but I'm not 100% certain.

I agree. Buster would still do this if he could. When Olive started, he started again although I had finally gotten him to stay away from it. I don't think they outgrown kitty tootsie rolls.

We did a really cheap solution with things that we found around our house.
We took one of those rubber made tubs and cut a hole in the top, to one side, so that the cat had room to jump up onto it. Took a cheap clearanced bathroom rug and cut the same size hole and placed it on top to catch the litter from the paws.
Worked perfectly and the dog couldn't reach his neck into it
The kitty loves it because he has total privacy.

I took material and attached it with stick on velcro, made tassles out of yard and what you dont see in the picture is we put the rug on top of that... I just didnt show it because its green, we need to get a matching brown one
