Greetings all!

I was previously a member of this group, although it has been SO very long ago that I would definitely have to be considered ‘new’(back when it was Boxerworld @ Onelist.com, if THAT tells you anything!)! I am pleased to see some names that I actually recognize (wasn’t even sure I had the right/new place until I saw Sharon Steele’s name!), and am extremely impressed with how much it has grown! I am looking forward to getting to know you all, or simply anew as the case may be!!!

A little about me…

My family has raised/trained/shown/been owned by boxers since the 1940’s. My father brought his first one back from Europe and began training/showing/and some (limited) breeding of them shortly there after. Fast forward a little bit and you have pictures of me in a bassinette, with a brown dog laying close near by! As the story goes, she really didn’t like me (seems she preferred to be an ‘only child’!), HOWEVER she wouldn’t even let friends and/or family get NEAR me unless my mother or father were around! As my father was headed off to Vietnam, he took comfort in the fact that he would never have to worry about me or my mother while he was gone!!

Fast forward another couple of decades, and we have pictures of our children (three boys: 16, 15, & 12) taking bottles while laying on these brown, lumpy pillows or getting pulled around on their sleds! Yes, boxers are part of our life and always will be! We do not breed any more, nor do we show nor compete any more, however I do still enjoy training these “untrainable” boxers on occasion or mostly helping others train them. Yes this is my favorite boxer myth, that they are ‘dumb, untrainable, etc.’…anyone that believes this has simply been outsmarted by a flat-faced, brown dog!

Anyway, currently we have two boxers: an extremely petite female named Xena who is approximately 7 years young, and her offspring Hercules (all 90+ pounds of him!) who is soon to be 4. Xena came to us as a rescue at the age of 3, as we really did not want to go through the ‘puppyhood’ thing after sending our male to the bridge at age 12. As I said, Xena is an extremely small little girl (approx. 40-45#’s despite our best efforts to fatten her up!), but is the quintessential example to the old saying that ‘it is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog!’…which is precisely how we got her! Seems that her (LAST!) previous owner (one of several!) had another adult female with whom they could not even let in the same ROOM together without bloodshed. They also had an 8 month old male, whom they did not think was ‘of age’ so frequently Xena was quartered with him. Well, two weeks to the day after we got her we ended up with not one, but FOUR puppies!!! So much for not doing the ‘puppyhood’ thing, huh?! Being a sucker for brown dogs of course we ended up keeping one of them…the “runt” (LOL!)…who is now known as Hercules. They could not BE more polar opposite! Xena is tiny, somewhat neurotic (she had MAJOR behavior issues when we got her!), and Hercules is HUGE and about as laid back as they come. She is dog aggressive, he wouldn’t hurt ANYTHING…unless he happened to roll over on it!

Not sure what is *required* nor expected, but that’s about all I can think of at the moment…I feel certain that there will be much more forthcoming when talking about brown dogs!!! Looking forward to hearing about you, and your brown dogs!!!

Hi and welcome, We're also fairly new here as well as from Indiana..small world. I look forward to hearing a lot of stories from a family that's been around boxers for such a long time. I'm sure you have some great ones to tell.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Actually, back when I was a member I don’t think that there even WAS a “board” to have a look <g> …it was just emails that I so looked forward to as a necessary distraction! Regardless, the ‘new look’ looks AWESOME!!!

Yes, it is a small world!!! We are in southern Indiana…WAY southern! Where are you guys located?! LOL…yep, LOTS of stories.

Well, I hope that some of the other ‘old timers’ (not sure I like calling myself that!) are still around! Is “JTPappy” still around by chance?! I often wonder how he is doing.

Anyway, they are both good as gold! They are literally inseparable and cannot even LAY without touching!!! They both know American Sign Language for all the basic obedience commands (AND a few tricks!) as I figured if you are going to teach them hand signals, might as well make it something meaningful!

When Xena first came to our house, she couldn’t be walked on a leash, got into the garbage if you so much as turned your head, would mess in the house, and DESTROY things if left alone for a minute! Within two days I had her trained to ring a bell to go out, and by day 3 she was completely crate trained! She is still somewhat dog aggressive (especially with smaller dogs due to an unbelievable prey drive!) and pretty territorial, but we have worked out most of her issues. Most of her neurosis comes from insecurity so we have really worked on that.
