We are finally out of kibble! So this weekend I started on RAW. Roxy does not like RAW chicken! She will eat it if I rip it apart and hand it to her. She spits it out, I hand it to her agian and she will reluctintally chew it up. The first time she threw up. The next time she didnt. I fed them 1 chicken thigh and leg a peice. When Roxy threw it up her next meal was Beef Rib Back Ribs. I gave her 3 of them since the bone is not chewable (at least my 2 dont chew them up). She did fine on that. The next day they got a chicken leg and thigh agian for breakfast, and then Pay got more chicken at night and Rox got more bones. She really doesnt like the chicken, but Payton LOVES LOVES LOVES it.

I also bought a Pork Loin Sirloin Portion Roast and chicken hearts and livers. I was planning on giving Payton some more chicken and then Roxy the bone from the pork roast tonight. They both ate the gizzards and hearts ok last night.

Am I going at this totally wrong? I feel like I am beating a dead horse. Maybe Roxy is just not a RAW type of dog, although I would really like them to be.

Please help....am I doing ok?

First, you really need to stick to one protein source at first. If they do fine on it introduce another after 2 weeks.

My dogs will not eat chicken legs or thighs. They just do not like them. They like the necks, ribs, wings and backs. I guess you could try feeding another part of the chicken to her and see if she shows a little more interest.

Also just give them a little more time to get use to the diet. When I first started Brody, he would lick his chicken for 15 min. before he would start eating. I hand fed Layla most of her chicken pieces until she was 6 months old because she had a tendency to get sidetracked by whatever caught her eye. And yes she would spit it back out sometimes too.

Yesterday, I spent 8 hours butchering 2 lambs for my dogs. I offered both of them a piece twice. Both times they spit it out and did not eat it. My husband asked "Are you sure they like lamb?" Yes, they love lamb! They ate their bowls of lamb this morning in record fashion. Why did they spit it out yesterday? I don't know other then I do not think my dogs are foodies. They will not eat it just because it's there. They are just as happy to walk away. Maybe Roxy isn't a foodie, too.

I was starting them on just chicken but when she wouldn't eat it I freaked!
Should I give them the hearts and gizzards? What about the pork? I already chunked it all out.

I wouldn't start on organs, they are a bit rich and could upset her tummy plus some dogs just won't touch them. My boy didn't like the chicken thing in the beginning either. I just don't think it's all that appealing at first, there's not s great smell factor going on with chicken. Beef, well that's another story but beef ribs don't usuallly have enough meat on them. We had london broil on sale this week so they got large beef chunks. He sucked a pound down in less than 3 seconds. The down side being that there's no bone in it. What I did to finally get hime to eat chicken voluntarily is I covered it in garlic powder. NO SALT, just powder. Garlic is not going to hurt anyone but it does make for some stinky breath. I had to hold it for him at first because he just couldn't figure out how to chomp it down but after 3 or 4 meals he got the hang of it. After 2 weeks I weaned him off the powder so now he does just fine on his own.

Also, when I first started my three on raw I would put the meal in warm water for about 10 min. They were not as interested if it was freezing cold.

Hope that helps!

Wow- that is ALOT of variety at once. She will eventually eat it- sometimes it takes a few days. One thing you don't want to do is cater- that develops picky eating- gee, if I don't like this chicken, mom will give warm it up or give me something better! (kinda like a kid LOL)
Try leaving it out for 15 mins or so. If she doesn't eat it, put it in the fridge and feed the next day. If you feel bad about that, try in a few hours. Remember- a dog won't starve itself.
You can also try shredded cheese, garlic powder, scoring the meat or warming it up eitehr in water or pan searing (just not in the microwave, they heat from inside out and can cook bones). I would do that in the beginning, before you serve it to her. Then, gradually wean off the attractiveness.
The other thing is, maybe she's just not hungry. I'd give the chicken a few more days.

Unless you have really big necks, its really not enough.

Try giving them about 4 or 5 necks instead and perhaps a few hearts/gizzards :) You need to give a balance of meat and bone, otherwise they will have loose stools. The bone is what helps them become hard.
