raw options?

I'm just wondering what you feed for raw food? I've been going to a pet store that has sold me on premixed, prepackaged meat with bone and vegetables. It's getting to be very expensive. I give Lucy bones for treats, but for meals she gets these premixed packages. What other options do I have?

My mom feeds Salmon, turkey necks and other stuffs mixed together. She usually gives turkey necks for treats.
They love them and their coats are so shiny, especially for labs (see gallery for pics of them)

You can pretty well feed any meat, most of which should be with bone in it. You should avoid weight bearing bones as they tend to be too hard. For example: Any part of the chicken, the backs and necks are the cheapest. Pork necks, lamp necks, lamp flaps, turkey necks, oxtail.

Where are you in B.C.? I may be able to suggest some sources.

You could go to Surrey Meat Packers. It's right in Cloverdale on 176th. They have a lot of different things for dogs. Here is their web site http://www.surreymeatpackersltd.com/petfood1.htm

They are not the cheapest source for chicken backs and necks, but most of their prices are pretty good.

That's where I went before we got Lucy to pick up some food, and the lady was really nice. Then, when we got Lucy she was a little sick at first, she would throw up her food, so I tried this other pet store and she told me I was feeding my dog garbage. So I've been going back there, but now it's getting to be so expensive. I think Lucy was just home sick, it was a long drive for her to come down here, she's from fort st.john. Now she's 6mo and I think it's probably safe for me to go back to non-organic food.

If you can afford to feed organic food that would be great. Most of us can't, so we feed the best we can.

Jan's right. Organic is very expensive. We originally went down that route too, but found it way too much. Although I would prefer to feed organic, we just can't. As long as Luke is fed raw its still better alternative than kibble.
Our monthly food bill for Luke is under $50.
Cheaper than the highest quality kibble

I have a 12 week old that is currently on Nutros. I was thinking of going to raw and was surprised to read that you can do it for around $50.00 a month. Would you mind posting an example of what you feed in a few days.

It's really hard to tell how much it costs me a month, but I am sure it's cheaper than good quality kibble. Chicken cost me 40 cents a pound. A case of chicken, 20kg (44 lbs) lasts me for about 2 months. I would say that half of Tara's diet is chicken. I buy a beef mix, that is 50 cents a lb as long as I buy 50lbs. I other stuff I get usually costs more, things like pork necks( 80 cents lb), turkey necks (1.50lb), offal varies anywhere from 1-2 dollars a lb. If you you want to feed the prepared raw food, it costs considerable more. As long as you are prepared to do the work it's relatively cheap.
