Raw-Hide Bones vs. Nyla-Bones

When we first got Luke I gave him rawhide too. But he sounded like he was always choking on them. Then I read on the boards how bad it is for their stomachs. So no more raw hide. I was always nervous watching him eat them anyhow. So I only give Luke the raw buffalo bones now, once a week. He loves them. But like with everything you have to supervise them and make sure nothing is being chewed off so they choke.
Luke also loves his plastic Nyla bone. But sometimes we take it away cause he gets crazy chewing the ends and his mouth bleeds. We also give him Wellness treats or Milkbones on occassion. I prefer the Wellness treats over the milkbones because their more natural. I have never tried Greenies before I am not sure about the ingridients (luke is so sensitive) but I hear it helps the bad breath, which he has.

My vote is for Nylabones. We have one large hard Nylabone and three of the medium sized softer Nylabones. We have had these bones for over a year and the boxers still chew on them daily! They love them, they do not splinter. I did notice a small amount of blood on the end of the harder bone once, but it wasn't something that happened time and time again.

My boxers also love the Iams milk-bone type treats. I think these hard treats, occasionally, are good for their teeth (as long as they eat a balanced diet and not too many treats). My boxers are not too fond of other brands of dog treats.

I use Bully Sticks. I have never had a problem with them. They are fully digestible and my Owen LOVES them. I leave one in every room for him. As with everything I never let him have one in the crate unsupervised.

I have to say that our pups love the nylabone edibles (bacon flavor). We always keep a good eye on them when they are chewing on them and we don't let them eat the entire thing in one sitting... normally we let them eat in in about 10 or more sittings. We tried to give them rawhide... BIG MISTAKE.. (at least for our pups)... they had the WORST diarrhea EVER! We even took them to the vet and the vet told us it was most likely the rawhide. We've never hed any problems with the edible nylabones though... i guess everydog is just different! Good luck finding what works for you and your pup!
