I'm very interested in feeding RAW because it seems like it is the best possible thing to give Levi, but i don't think we can afford to feed him a totally RAW diet. Would it be ok just to supplement his diet? I know not to feed him RAW with dry food. Could i just give him a chicken leg every once in a while? He's on Blue buffalo puppy food. If it is ok do i just defrost it and give it to him or do i need to do anything to it first? I have no clue about this.

There is no reason that you can't feed a raw meal when ever you want. Just don't feed kibble in the same meal.

I treat my dogs to raw every now and then, especially in the summer. I give them the raw frozen on a hot day outside.......it keeps them cool and busy. And no muss no fuss! I will buy a chicken or turkey, chop it up in portions and freeze. Then out they go and I dump their portion out of the wrapper and they are as happy as can be! Frozen chunks are also great for teethers or big chewers.

But make sure they don't bury it and save it for later. Found out the hard way that the bacteria that grows may cause a "burn/rash" on their muzzle when they dig it back up at a later date.

As you already know not to feed kibble and raw in the same meal, I don't see any harm in it and I bet Levi will LOVE it =D Just allow a little extra time to defrost so that the bone isn't too hard.

If you start paying attention to your supermarket sale days/times and have a chat to your local butcher you might find that you can hunt out some raw bargains. We switched to raw late last year and now save $90 per month (2 dogs and 1 cat) on food.... For the first few months I probably broke even but now we're saving a small fortune :)

That would be great for him, and I'm sure he'd love it :D I do that for my girls every once in a while, they usually eat kibble but if I see meat on sale (usually chicken quarters, pork ribs, or cuts of beef with the bone in) I'll buy it to feed them for dinner one night, anything that's leftover they have for breakfast the next morning, then it's back to kibble the following evening for dinner. It's a nice treat for them :)

I have to add though, it would be hard to do if you free-feed him kibble though. Raw food has to be fed completely separately, ideally 12 hours apart from feeding dry food -- it's not enough to simply put it in a different bowl ;) So you'd have to plan that day for a raw meal, say, if you wanted to give him some meat in the evening, and you'd want to take away his dry food after the morning feeding so he has nothing else until the raw meal.
