Hi, I am new to Boxer world and this is my first post. I have a male named Ryan who just turned 1 year in March. He has become a real picky eater. We have tried numerous dog foods (Dry) over the last year and its always the same outcome....he stops eating them after about 3 weeks to a month. Recently I have started mixing in 1 raw egg with breakfast and 1 with dinner. He absolutely loves this. He is starting to eat right and put on a little weight as he was getting kinda skinny from not eating. He has been to the vet and the vet said he checks out fine, there are no medical conditions for him not eating other then he just don't feel like it. So my question is this....Is it bad to feed him a raw egg twice a day with his food? Any long term health risks associated with this method. I know in humans we get cholesterol and what not but how would eggs effect a dog. He really seems to love this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will post pictures sometime this week.
Thanks

Raw eggs are very good for your dog - but not more than 2-3 per week. You could probably get away with feeding slightly more if they are cooked (specifically the whites) or if you feed the yolk only. But I still wouldn't exceed a maximum of 3-4. I note that's more than recommended for people - and dogs are smaller ;)

What's wrong with too many raw eggs, incidentally, is that the biotin in the raw white binds to one of the D vitamins and causes a deficiency. The end result is that your dog's hair will fall out. Like so many things in life, a little is very beneficial, but too much does more harm than good. True for eggs as well.

Thanks for your reply. Any suggestions on what to use to keep him eating. We have tried canned dog food mixed in with the kibble but now he just eats around the kibble. The egg thing worked wonderfully but I don't want to put him at any health risks. He is the best dog I have ever had (Growing up and as an adult). We love our boxer so much we are thinking of getting another. So loving, smart, energetic, and non-stop comedy. To this day he has yet to show ANY agression to people or other animals. He has never growled for any reason (I don't even know if he knows how lol). You can take anything from him and he don't care.
Sorry was getting a little off track. So if anyone has suggestions that can be used as a daily topping for his food I would love to hear it.

How about different things on different days? A couple of times a week it can be raw egg. Other times you can try a little yoghurt, some cottage cheese, a little raw hamburger, canned food, some cooked vegetables, some olive or salmon oil... Lots of possiblities really. I'm sure there are many other suggestions in previous threads - just do a search for supplements or healthy additions (or some similar terms).

While I love the idea of mixing in a variety of toppings on a rotating basis (it's what I do) - you can also consider rotating kibble. Some of us (who have dogs that can tolerate it) go from one premium kibble to another. It's a bit like carnivores eat in the wild.........they eat what's plentiful while it's available and then move onto other foods. Fish, rodents, bugs, fruit, roots, grass, eggs, birds. Balance over time.
Welcome to BW.

I usually boil my chicken before putting it on the bar-b-q or in the oven.....and I give a bit of the water the chicken was cooked in to my dogs and they just love it. The water is flavoured with something they like and it's not a commercial broth that would be full of sodium etc. Just pour a cup on the kibble, let it soak in some, and Ryan will surely eat it all up.

Good luck, and welcome!

I rotate my kibbles and thats been something that worked for tango when nothing else did. I use boiled chicken, Prairie raw lamb diet lightly cooked(he wont eat it raw) cottage cheese, some canned innova or merrick from time to time,NB lamb roll grated, scrambled eggs, leftover potatoes mashed up, somtimes I even grill him some chicken along with ours hehe. He really loves that too! So many things you can do that will keep your baby healthy and happy :)
