Debbie, do you have any trouble protecting Scoot from the cats and Legend?

I have always wanted a rat, but now I am in more of a position to get one, I am worried mostly about the cats, but also about the dogs.

Where do you keep Scoot? And are you able to handle him when the other furbabies are around?

We have Scoot's cage in one of our extra bedrooms. It sits on top of a dresser and we keep the door closed so our kitties can't get at him.

When I go in to clean his cage or feed him, the cats will come and sit right at the threshhold of the door, watching me and I've even held Scoot down to where they could sniff him. They seem more puzzled than anything by him, but I still wouldn't trust them alone together!

Legend has never encountered Scoot, and I'm sure he would just think he's another plaything!

I said it before and I'll say it again...rats make GREAT pets. They're not nearly as stinky (believe it or not) as mice and gerbils and such, they have such cute personalities and as they get older, they get more calm and like to just lie in your lap while you stroke their little ears.

If you've got a room you can shut the door to, I say go for it. You'll be glad you did!

I had a pet rat, Baby, for 2 years before she got cancer and we had to send her to the bridge. She was the best pet. She'd ride around on my shoulder and crawl up in my hair and hide under my ponytail.

My cat never bothered her. She'd sit and watch Baby running on her wheel, but never tried to get her. We also had 2 hamsters that were little escape artists and the cat never bothered them either. I think because we handled them all the time, they must've smelled a little like us, so that's why she left them alone.

It's weird though because my cat was a "mouser". She'd get the little wild ones that would come into our house and bring them to us so we would tell her what a good cat she was.

I say go for it!!! Rats make wonderful pets.

We don't really have a separate room that we could put the rat in. I was hoping that my husband could modify a small aquarium. But I guess for the cats, watching the rat running back and forth, might be a bit much.

Thanks for responding! :)

Just got a rat

I just got a rat as a pet, she originally was snake food, but she was so docile that the snakes would not eat her. So now she lives in my bedroom in a ten gallon tank, her name is Tasteless. I named her that because Monte or Gloria, my two Ball Pythons just didn't have a taste for her. She is now a household pet, here forever. She is a sweet heart, when I clean her tank she rides in my shirt pocket. She is getting very fat and lazy. My boxer boys Bugsy and Oskar seem to get along with her. I have to watch carefully that Oskar doesn't stomp on her while playing. He plays a little ruff, likes stompping on things. Rats are very clean little creatures, they wash themselves kinda like a cat. I change her tank and clean it every week. I feed her a blended fortified rabbit chow that I get a the pet feed store. It seems that they are good pets, but I have admit over the years I've been feeding rats to my snakes, there isn't very many that are so friendly and docile as this one. I've been bite many times by rats.
