sassy which is a little over 1 year old broke out with a red rash all over the underside of her body and was licking fiercely, i took her to the vet and they gave her a steroid shot, put her on antibiotics and a topical spray. of course it cleared up and they said she probably just got into something. about two weeks ago the rash was back, i took her back to vet and we ended up with the same course of treatment and the vet saying that she is probably just going to have "skin problems". i just want her to be comfortable and truthfully i don't want to go the vet once a month for the same thing because it is costly to me and traumatic for her. my male boxer hasn't had any problems that she is having. after doing some research myself, i have ordered derm caps es, yeast tablets, and a multi vitamin called vita chews from 1800petmeds. i just need some feedback, if anybody can help or has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it.

For your vet to just assume she is going to have skin problems is just wrong. You might want to find a new vet. The fact that the rash is on her underside could indicate that is something she is walking through and rubbing on her underside, like a particular type of grass that she is allergic to or something like poison ivy. Finnegan my white male who never has any skin issues recently developed a rash on his chest and belly after running through a patch of poison ivy, my vet also wanted to give him steroids but I insisted in holding off a few days and just treated it with Benedryl and some antibiotics and it cleared up within a few days.

So you might want to keep an eye on what she is running through in the future it may help you figure out what’s causing the reaction.

One of my boxers also has a rash. It covered his whole underside plus the backside of all his legs--all solid cherry red. He has had this since the first of July. I am treating him holistically and it is almost gone. At the present time I am using a Calendula ointment and essential oils such as Lavendar with just a little bit of Tea Tree Oil. Plus I am using different oils as supplements in his raw food. I have also added Vit. C plus our holistic vet added an oral allergy "potion" to give to him twice a day. Good luck--these skin rashes can be very, very frustrating. I have found over time though with the right treatment it does get better. I have a very recent thread about it in the holistic forum if you care to read it.

Rashes-Could be allergies

Well I had the same problem with my furbaby. Did the whole steroid shot thing for about 4 months. The I changed my et, and he suggested allergy testing and sure enough I did, and my poor baby has food as well as inhalant allergies. I am not saying this is the same for your furbaby, but it would not hurt to try it out.

Poor Sassy and poor you! If all your vet does is give her a steroid shots, she probably will continue to have problems as all a steroid shot does is to hide the symptons. See if you can find a holistic vet in your area. They will try and find a reason for the rash and not just treat the symptons.

Becarefule with the yeast

If your furbaby has allergies, one of the things she can be allergic to is yeast. You should make sure she is not allergic to yeast before giving it to your baby,

rash again

i feel like i am so depressed. we just had hurricane frances come through and everything is a mess, now ivan is to follow in the same path. over the weekend sassy's rash started again, a few red bumps and progressed to more red bumps each day. today when i got home from work she was covered on the underside, more like pustules today and even in her ears. so i guess, here we go again for the third month in a row. i will call the vet in the am, but i really don't know what to do, please help

Have you looked for a holistic vet yet? I really think that is the best route to go.

The stress of the hurricane certainly wouldn't have help. You might try "Rescue Remedy during the next storm. It might help. You should be able to find it at a health food store.

I hope Sassy is better soon.
