I have heard of a different way to teach "settle". When I first heard it I was a little skeptical as it sounds similar to Alpha rolling but when I said that the trainer said, "No no, this is MUCH different." Tell me what you think:

Really only needed if dog is being really silly...basically you have them lie down (if they can) and then gently push them over onto their side (NOT back). Gently hold them there (NOT with your whole body on top of them) and say in a gentle, soothing voice, "Settle..."

I haven't actually done this - generally I just place my hand flat on Xena's head and say "settle" and that kind of works...

You know, that sounds more natural.

Also, I've kind of pulled Ruthie down onto my lap before, on her side, and she doesn't mind that as long as she gets belly rubs. :D

She just hates the position of being held up on her back. Not that I really blame her, it doesn't look particularly comfortable for her. I'm not doing that anymore.
