Quick Question on throw up

Sounds sick, but not too bad, In the last week its happened twice. I'll come home at night from being away, let Diesel free from his cage (he is left with food & water) we go out do his business, play, then come inside and play. He'll slurp down a bowl of water, then run around some more. and then just stop and puke. Both times its been the same. Both times his throw up has been food. Just food, and some water. Is this something I should worry about or is it just the running around mixed with the water & food? His food has been the same, nothing different. thanks in advance.

I guess it could be too much water too fast after exercise (especially if it's also very cold water). Dogs don't have very efficient cooling systems - no sweat glands except on the foot pads and inside the mouth (that's why the tongue extends/swells so much when they're hot - to increase the available surfact for cooling). Anyway, they do have a tendancy to try to use water for cooling themselves down, and drink far more than they actually need - for hydration purposes, that it. And that, in turn, can cause them to throw up.

So I'd try limiting the amount of water he consumes immediately after exercise (just let him have a small bowl) and see if that doesn't help. You can refill the bowl half an hour later, in case he actually needs the hydration (chances are, he won't).

If that doesn't help, then you might have to consider that maybe his food doesn't suit him too well.

Do you come home the same time everyday?

If so I have a thought. Judah was doing the same thing when we went back to work in the fall (my wife is a math teacher and I am a professor), and I couldn't figure out what it was. Turns out that after a couple of days he had learned to eat his food later and later, so that he essentially had just eaten within an hour of us getting home. Well we would let him out to play and he would run around and all of a sudden YACK! So our solution was to feed him only in morning, leave a SMALL amount of food with him during the day, and then a second feeding after he got done playing when we got home. No more yacking! I have read (possibly here on BW) that our pups are at increased risk for bloat (very serious and possibly deadly) if they eat and play hard right away, so I would try to figure out if this is what is going on.

Probably not here on Boxerworld The theory that dogs are at risk of bloat (gastric volvulous/torsion) if they exercise before or after eating has been disproven by several veterinary research studies. There is a sticky thread about that, and information on factors that *do* increase the risk of bloat at the top of this forum.
