RubyRu

Boxer Pal
I am trying to burn off some of Ruby's energy, she has to stay in all day and gets walked once before I go to work for 30-40 mintues then walked once I get home for the same amount of time, then run round the block for ten minutes before I go to bed.
She is a very energentic dog however and has to run full tilt across the field we excerise on for at least ten minutes, so to help her burn off engery I am trying to get her to fetch sticks/balls/favourite toys.
Frankly, she just doesnt get it, or rather she knows exactly what shes supposed to do but she is of the opinon if I wanted the stick/ball/toy I should have kept hold of it in the first place, and she isnt interested in fetching it back.

Does anyone else have this problem or has Ruby just cottened on to my ruse?

Keep Trying

Ozzy didn't quite get the whole fetch thing at first, but I kept working with him and now I don't even have to tell him to drop it. Ozzy basically taught my Vinny how to play cause Vinny chases Ozzy everywhere. Fetch is awesome for me because all I need to do to get Ozzy to calm down is go in the back yard and throw the ball for thirty mins. Once they're pooped, both will lay down in their fav spots and chill. My advise is to keep trying, persistance. Maybe use a ball that has food in it.

Bella doesn't fetch either. Quite frankly she doesn't even pay attention to balls unless it's her babble ball! When I throw the tennis ball for my JRT, Bella goes into a pounce stance so that she can attack him when he runs back with it!

LILYLARUE

Lily is just now beginning to figure it out. Bella however, always spoils the fun. When I throw the ball, all three chase it. Bella gets to it first cause Lily backs off a bit when she gets to it. Bella will then growl and take the ball. The other two then walk away. Not only did Bella ruin it, she also drops it immediately then goes and play-attacks Lily. Poor Lily......she never gets any fun.

Bella did teach Lily to catch when I toss a treat. Lily used to lose it everytime cause Bella is such a piggy and takes it from her. Sometimes right from her lips!

Oh, they have balls that have a bungee string on them. Specifically to teach a dog to fetch. You have the end of the string on your wrist. You toss the ball. The dog chases it. If the dog doesn't pick it up, you wind it back to you, where the dog will probably chase it to you. If the dog picks it up, then you can still wind it to you saying the command, "bring it". I thought about getting one, but since Lily seems to have grown a brain lately, may not need it now. LOL

Dakota LOVES to chase after the balls when you throw them but he NEVER brings them back. He just ends up playing with it on his own for a little while then will drop it somewhere and if you go pick it up and throw it again he does the same and it'll go on for a while. I've tried to get him to bring it back but if he does come back to me he drops the ball where he got it and comes to me without it. It would be nice to get him to bring it back but I don't know if it'll happen.

It's funny that you all mention this because Cody does the same thing and I always thought it was kind of odd. When I am hold a stick/ball he is very interested in it when it's in my hand, then I throw it and he'll dart after it. Sometimes he will pick it up and chew it for a few minutes then drop it, but other times he will just sniff it and leave it. He just doesn't get what he is supposed to do I guess. I'm glad that some other people are experiencing this as well.

Ruby (my Ruby) is not at all interested in fetching a ball, but she goes nuts over frisbees. It the problem is running to fetch it try a frisbee with peanut butter smeared under the rim, let her have a good sniff before you throw it. If it is the returning of the ball, frisbee etc. try having another toy to tempt her back again, that is what we did, threw her frisbee and when she picked it up squeecked her fave chew toy and she would bolt right back to get her slobbery chops on it (so it not only made her return but was also a reward for doing so)

None of my Boxers have ever been interested in fetch. My current boy will do it in the house but not outside, but other 2 never cared. My first boy went to his grave and would NEVER play fetch the entire 6 years we had him.

For some it just isn't something they're interested in. If you go at night, maybe try a laser pointer?

My Cody loves to play fetch. He will chase a ball till your arm is about to fall off. He LOVES lovicon his ball better than anything in the world.
Aniah likes to be chased. She will run after the ball and grab it only so Cody will chase after her. When he quits chasing her she will drop the ball.
