Boxer Buddy
Hello all,
I hope a bunch of folks from the Boxer Ring look over here a bit also so I might get some opinions...here goes.
Since she is a direct decendent of Boxers, my Dogo Argentino questions ought to be easy to answer...right?
We have a 5 month old Dogo named Amy, who is one of the sweetest babies you could ever meet...perhaps even too sweet. She is very shy in the sense that loud noises, verbal reprimands or scolding, and any other "quick" out of the ordinary circumstance seems to make her shy away. She just ducks her head and almost cowers down like she expects something is going to hit her. We have had her since she was just barely 6 weeks old and this behavior has been apparent since she came to us. She has never been "physically" corrected for anything that has happened since she has been with us. I would like to think that the breeders from which we got her also treated her well and caused no "threat" to her as a very small pup. Max might very well tell a different story of her aggression or lack thereof, because he is the recipient of most of her playfulness and chewing. Sonic gets chewed on some also, as well as Frosty, but not near the level Max sustains. She IS his baby though. If Amy had Max's attitude, I wouldn't be asking this question. Obviously, she is not intimidated by other animals. Why does she seem to be so sensitive and shy/scared of humans? She acts as if she has received some kind of abuse at the hands of two-leggers. Is this somewhat normal and will she grow out of it? Another point to consider...she seems to almost be deathly afraid of small children. She will do almost anything to stay out of the reach of 2 to 5 year olds. The breeders had no children and she really hasn't been exposed to more than a couple of kids in this age range, but she acts as if they happen to get a hold of her, she might not live to tell the story. Other than the shyness, she is an awesome little baby and seems to be healthy and happy. We've had a little trouble with various species of worms but thats about it health wise. The main reason I am concerned with this trait is because it goes against the "standard" of Dogo's which says they should be very confident and "masters of their domain" so to speak. Are there any tips or techniques that might help to change this type behavior? I do hope it is just a puppy trait and that she will outgrow it but any opinions and advice would be appreciated. Have a nice weekend all and take care! Tom
